Both Hammond and Hume have the necessary attributes to be very good strikers, they have genuine pace, the ability to take on and beat defenders, are fairly decent in the air, comfortable in possession. All they are lacking at the moment is confidence.
IMO CL made a key error in judgement in both cases, Hammond scored his first goal for the club against QPR, but then was left on the bench until the last 10 minutes in the following game against Burnley, Hume nets his first away vs Derby, following game he is on the bench vs Watford. This was a mistake both players confidence would have been high, they should have started the following games, they would have been flying, this would have given them the opportunity to go on a run. Strikers dont want resting, especially when they have netted, IMO both players lost impetus and therefore their confidence and form dipped as a consequence.
Also against Southampton I would have played the pair of them, as they had looked dangerous playing together against Derby, I think at present they are also both aware that whoever starts probably has an hour to score or they are off and replaced by the other, this will not help, it increases pressure and makes them more liable to snatch at chances. Competition is good but it needs to be channelled in the right way, IMO make Hume first choice and give him a sustained run in the side but the competition will come from knowing that if he does not produce in that run then Elvis will come in and be given an extended run. Then we will start to see an improvement in confidence and performance.
