He was a bit-part player for them before and he'll be even more of a bit-part player now. Fair play to him tho', he's lived off the former for the rest of his career. It's similar to how Ryan Bertrand is referred to as a Champions League winner.

Does he have a negative impact on the dressing room or something? Releasing him implies something isn’t working correctly, so I wonder if there’s something going on behind the scenes?

Probably to allow him to move after the transfer window as he hasn't got a moved lined up already.
 
Kasper!! Bring him back!

I bloody miss him. It makes me so sad to see him not make it somewhere else, and knowing in my soul we wouldn't have gone down if he'd stayed (or if we'd replaced him adequately)
