But you can play it on dozens of other manufacturers' MP3 players.

Apple is the one making things difficult.

you can play it on the zune though as it plays aac (might not be true)-at the end of the day you don't have to use itunes, you don't have too own an iPod-as you say theres plenty of other download services and mp3 players out there, so there not making things awkward-why should other download services and players take advantage of their products?if you want to drive a car you can't expect to have the engine from a aston martin inside a ford escort-its not difficult-either you use their service or not-they dont have a monopoly like microsoft effectively do.

It';s not the same thing.

If you buy a CD on the Sony label you don't expect it to only work in a Sony CD player.
For stuff like CDs, videos, DVDs etc the manufacturers worked together to create a common format. Apple is the one being different.

If you buy a PC there are a number of different operating systems you can use, you don't have to use Windows.

I've never seen a Microsoft based product that's 'better' than an Apple one, that goes for software and hardware. At the end of the day Microsoft make clunky ugly stuff and Apple make well designed, aesthetically pleasing stuff.

Only exception possibly being the Office suite of programs, just because it's ubiquitous.
