Yes. I never actually use the "eff" word except on rare occasions when provoked by Leicester City defenders.

I have to admit that my comment had been made laughingly and her reply was made fondly.I was provoking/teasing her about the use of jargon to a non-scientist. Everything depends upon the tone and context. When I was young I was once called "a miserable anti-social f_____g bastard". The chap who called me that was a friend then and forty years later remains a friend. A great deal depends on whether people say something with affection.
Various malignant people have claimed that I occasionally provoke to get a reaction. One of my favourite occasions was on finding myself in a friendly meeting with some Jewish gentlemen. I early on used the word "chutzpah" and to their delight pointed out that I was the first person in the room to use Hebrew.

Have you ever heard Grandpa Simpson on one of his long, rambling conversations with himself that never go anywhere and are entirely unrelated to the initial point?

:icon_lol: Harsh, Matt.

I'd just like to say I like having the Gwill around, he brings something a little different. Some of it may be rooted in senility, or perhaps good old-fashioned loonism, or maybe he's just spent too much time in tea rooms, but I for one wouldn't trade him for a jas123, a SuperScout or a syd.

Or a spion. Pendantic twat.

Same here, mainly for the fact that a lot of his posts do remind me of said situation. I normally smile at the end of reading them, even if I'm not sure what the bloody hell he was on about.

:icon_razzThank you. However, my favourite review came from Boy Genius a couple of months ago "Twelve pages of utter bollux and only David Gwilliam writes sense."

I will make one boast: in over 1700 posts I have never called any other member names.

I have heard of the Simpsons but never watched it. This Grandpa Simpson sounds a thoroughly good chap. However, please do not imagine my posts being said in an American accent. My voice was once compared to James Mason - a delusion I treasure.

May I remind Spion that he livened up a thread on Owen Hargreaves by praising Italian beer. He also posted a photograph of an aeroplane in a thread about a player from Bristol. Mawsley asked an interesting question in this thread of National Trust membership. When it comes to diverting a thread I do have friendly competition.

Some of the best threads have come when the dull topic of whether some player will come or not (and we haven't got a clue) becomes diverted into a thread about the virtues or otherwise of a ginger haired interviewer, the culinary talents of that nice Nigella Lawson and the sheer unpleasantness of Mr Adrian Chiles..

Increasingly I accept the charge of senility however I do deny the charge of "loonism" since loons do not know what they are doing. My posts are deliberately rambling. When they fail that is ineptitude rather than accident. As for tea rooms I can only say that cream scones and laughter with friends are among the gentler pleasures of life.

For me one of the measures of a good post is that it gets a reaction so thank you Beighton, Blue Maniac, Cate and Spion.

Incidentally when I posted on topic about Steve Coogan's clash with the News Of The World reporter nobody was interested. Shame on you.

Sorry Gwilliam, I realise I was going with too high a level question.

Let's kick off with something altogether easier: how many members has the Trust got?

He didn't refer to the NT. He meant the Foxes Trust.

:icon_wink
Are you sure that is what he meant? I do feel you are being unfair to Mawsley. If you were right he would obviously have included the word "Foxes". ..
Mawsley's posts suggest a man of education and distinction. Such a man may well be in the National Trust.
It is unlikely he would ask me about the Foxes Trust since I am not a member and I believe both members try to keep their membership numbers confidential..

If you are right then sadly it will not be the first time I have misunderstood somebody's post.

Anyone else notice that there were loads of NoftheW papers left today and the take up of the "very last issue" was not as much as they expected. I popped into our local Co-Op about 4ish and they had 2 massive piles left. Most of the others Mirror/People/Mail/Express etc had about 5-6 copies left or less.

I hardly ever bought the paper. The only time in recent times I did was for a CD or some other free gift. If there was only NoftheW left in the past when going late for the Sunday papers I would come away with nothing or get a Football paper like the Non League paper instead.

I'm sure that there must have been some context, however spurious :icon_bigg

I had no problem with your posts which I enjoyed. If there had been a problem then as I pointed out earlier I have a record of not calling people names or of attacking the poster rather than the post. But no your posts were fine with me.
My point was directed at BM and Beighton. Your posts did not lead BM to unfortunate suggestions of senility or loonism. Beighton did not accuse you of ignoring the initial point while writing about The Simpsons..

And since the above paragraph is somewhat removed from the initial topic then that’s me done.

No Mawsley you know I would never put that. I regard you and all other members with unconditional regard. I have been told yesterday how poor the standard of my posts are (comparisons with Syd) but I have tried to avoid name calling or unpleasant personal comments - I leave that to Beighton and Blue Maniac.

That there ginger haired bint has finally walked

Wonder how much Roop has paid her to keep quiet

Still would, though.......
