GAINSBOROUGH TRINITY have picked up former Cambridge United and Leicester City striker Trevor Benjamin on non-contract terms.
Benjamin began his career as a trainee at Cambridge in 1995 and spent five years with the U's, scoring 35 goals in 96 League starts for the club.
In July 2000 Benjamin joined Leicester for a fee of £1.5m. He scored 11 times in 35 starts in a five-year spell with the Foxes, during which time he spent loan spells at a number of clubs including Crystal Palace, Norwich, Gillingham, Rushden, Brighton and Northampton.
He signed permanently for Northampton in January 2005 but only stayed with the club a month before joining Coventry for a nominal fee in February.
The 29-year-old remained with the Sky Blues until the end of the 2004/05 season when he joined Peterborough.
He made over 50 appearances for the Posh during his two season stay at London Road and spent spells on loan at Watford, Swindon, Boston United and Walsall.
Benjamin joined Hereford at the start of last season and his 10 goals in 34 League appearances helped the club clinch promotion into League One.
Trinity boss Steve Charles feels he will add a lot to his squad but is currently a bit behind in terms of fitness.
Charles told BBC Radio Lincolnshire: "He gives us strength and power up front but he'll have to fight for his place like everyone else.
"We're delighted to have his signature but he'll be treated exactly the same as the other players. I like to think I treat them all fairly.
"He does need some training and match fitness. He needs sharpening up a little bit."
