He loaned me a hat the other week.

Admittedly, it was someone else's hat he'd borrowed from them a week before... and the hat turned out to be completely rubbish... so you've both right and wrong - yes he takes other people's rubbish and recycles it but also yes, he will loan. Just ask him nicely.
