A SOS for techies out there! I work for a charity and have no supporting IT department or money to waste getting IT support or a new PC in unless necessary.

One of the computers in the office is working sluggishly. It has the same programmes as I do at home and on the other computers all of which are fine namely Adaware, AVG and CCleaner which are all up to date and finding no problems. Three quarters of the hard drive is free and it was defragged today. The PC remains painfully slow especially when logging in. Not so bad I'd think it needed binning but frustrating to use.

Any ideas what I can try? :102:

I had a similar problem.

I was told to delete the HDDs in system properties so it re-installed the drivers. Something to do with UDMA and PIO mode. It may be worth checking that both computers are set to the same mode first.

Its what worked for me!

Good avatar providings.

I'm happy to give it a go but I wouldn't know where to start! :icon_conf

Thanks for the advice dave666. :038: Any chance someone can talk me through this in layman's terms? Would be very grateful! :icon_wink

I've used techmonkies recently and they talk you through how to check if there are any viruses on your pc, and how to speed it up generally.

Download HiJackThis: http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en...ols/hijackthis

Install it and generate a log file, then head over to http://www.techmonkeys.co.uk and post the log file there with an explanation of what the problem is. One of the malware experts will guide you through getting of the issue's and protecting against it in the future.

Touch wood yes. :038: Went on Techmonkeys as suggested and can't say enough for the promptness, quality of advice and politeness. Some, to me, random guy from Nevada taking time out and it ended up quite easily solved.

He suggested an anti-malware and it found an infection which I thought Adaware had caught a long time ago. Hey presto I was away. :icon_bigg

Thank you both for your advice. :038::038:
