9 years and 322 appearances later though, it is a lesson to us all in how much more there is to a footballer than his ability to play football.

Morgan has carried this team through many matches with sheer leadership, determination and a love of defending. He will rightly go down as a legend despite his limited talent.

When he retires shortly after well over 700 senior matches, he is one of those that has made the most of what he had. Any fool can pick out a talented player, but it takes someone special to identify an invaluable attitude.

A lot has been made of the character in our dressing room. Sometimes it has been mentioned in a negative sense, but Pearson often said he wanted strong characters in there and Morgan has clearly been a huge influence on the group. I always get the impression that he’s hugely respected by the players and the team has mostly been seen as a tight bunch, whether times were good or tough.

The fact that he has contributed so much on the pitch is surely beyond any of our expectations and him leading us as he did in that season, is something that is the stuff of legend.

Morgan has been outstanding. He is such an intelligent player. His anticipation and positioning are so good he hardly ever has to run. He organises the defence superbly, even now when he makes an appearance I feel confident when we are defending corners. His leadership has been exemplary, he always sets an excellent example on and off the pitch.
