'I want to make the best fist of it'
By Bill Anderson
Tomorrow marks the first anniversary of Robert Kelly taking over Leicester City's fortunes - and hardly could any 12 months have thrown so much at anyone.
Having been a surprise choice (to himself as well) as Craig Levein's assistant, Kelly was the reluctant caretaker who became fully-fledged boss, a life-changing situation, and he did a great job staving off relegation.
This season, he has not quite done it yet. But with Milan Mandaric's millions tantalisingly close, there are signs he can improve things further.
This is a situation he never dreamed of when he went into the Plymouth match at Home Park a year ago tonight, and especially not the next day either when Levein got the sack.
He said: "Firstly, I thought I was leaving. Basically, it was about people losing their jobs. We had all come here together and the way it works, usually everyone goes together.
"I was probably looked on as a safe pair of hands in charge for a game or two, and looking no further than that.
"My first game was losing to Southampton in the Cup and while you never want to lose games, it did clear the fog away. We had 16 games to keep ourselves in the division.
"I didn't think I would be in charge for those 16 games, (and thought) that the board would do something to get someone else in eventually."
So you didn't expect the full-time job?
"No, what I thought was, well I am in charge, and if I am going to do it for three days or three games, I have got to do it properly.
"But I never looked too far ahead, I still don't. Yes, you do plan but what I have learned is that you deal game-to-game."
If the first month of his year was a period of uncertainty, then this is another one surely.
He said: "Yes, a big one. It has been like that throughout my tenure, really.
"The actual job, then the uncertainty of what division we would be playing in, then the summer when I knew we had to change things - and it has been very difficult.
"The board helped me as much as they could. But, in the end, we were down one player, with Joey Gudjonsson, Lee Morris, Mark de Vries, Patrik Gerrbrand and Joe Hamill out, and only four in, which put a big strain on those still here.
"This season, we had a poor start, got it back on track, went backwards again and all this takeover business blew up. Whatever anyone says, while you try to concentrate on the job in hand, it is always there in the background.
"You try to drag people back to what they are supposed to be working on and it is not always easy to do that.
"If there is any clarity, it is to do with our football, our training, our work, our organisation. We have not deviated from that. The football is the only thing we can affect and that is what we work very hard on. You try to bring your focus back to that.
"The chance to manage a club like Leicester, for me with my background, does not come along very often, and I want to make the best fist of it I possibly can. And I make sure I work as hard as I possibly can at it.
"It is too good a club and too good an opportunity to miss.
"Saturday's postponement gave me a chance to reflect and, over the year, we have not done too bad.
"We have won more games than we have lost, and got a healthy total of points, though you always want more. But, at the end of it all, we are 18th in our division.
"We don't want that, me or the players. They are a great group and it has been a hard year for them too.
"Someone told me when I came back to Leicester that it was never going to be boring, never going to be dull.
"Well, if the takeover goes through, I will have had three different chairmen, a relegation battle and a big injection of cash after having none. So he was right after all."
"I never looked too far ahead, I still don't. Yes, you do plan but what I have learned is that you deal game-to-game."
