Won 2-0, Weso & Odhiambo
FT: Partick Thistle 0-2 Leicester City
Posted on: Tue 24 Jul 2007
Leicester City made it five wins from five for their pre-season campaign with a well earned 2-0 victory over Scottish First Division side Partick Thistle on Tuesday night.
Youngsters Eric Odhiambo and James Wesolowski grabbed the goals for the Foxes on the night in front of a 1,403 strong crowd at the Firhill Stadium.
Manager Martin Allen named three of his new signings in the starting line up - Stephen Clemence, James Chambers and Bulgarian international Radostin Kishishev. Matty Fryatt, who had grabbed a goal in City's 3-0 victory over Notts County last weekend, began the game in attack alongside Mark de Vries.
City's first chance of the game came in the 13th minute of the contest. Clemence threaded a delightful ball into the path of de Vries, but the big striker saw his shot well blocked by Jags defender Scott Boyd.
The Foxes came close again five minutes later. Richard Stearman, who had started the game in a right-wing position, swung in a corner from the right, but Clemence's acrobatic volley from the edge of the 18-yard box fell just over the bar.
Clemence was in the thick of the action again on 23 minutes. The former Birmingham midfielder picked up a loose clearance in the middle of the park and fed a fine ball through to Alan Sheehan, but the Irishman saw his shot from distance comfortably saved by Jonathan Tuffey in the Jags goal.
Thistle had their first clear chance on goal a minute later. Stevie Murray swung in a corner from the right, but striker Liam Buchanan was unable to get a clean strike on the ball at the far post and Paul Henderson was able to gather easily.
A quick move down the right almost produced an opportunity for the home side in the 28th minute, but Stearman was on hand to produce an excellent block and thus end any danger.
Jags striker Buchanan broke through the City backline with five minutes of the half remaining, but Stearman was on his toes again and made up ground to recover and make another good block.
Manager Allen made three changes on at half time - James Wesolowski, Odhiambo and Shaun Newton replacing Radostin Kishishev and Bruno N'Gotty. Stearman moved to the centre-back position, allowing Newton to take up the right wing spot.
City broke the deadlock in the 55th minute. Fryatt found substitute Odmiambo 25 yards from goal with an inch perfect past, and the Leicester youngster made no mistake - blasting a well drilled shot past Tuffey.
The Jags almost hit straight back moments later, but Buchanan saw his powerful shot well blocked by captain for the night Gareth McAuley.
Gary Hawkins tried his luck from range for the home side on the hour mark - but Henderson was there to make the save.
A quick break almost created Leicester's second goal on 62 minutes, but Shaun Newton's shot on the angle landed wide following good work from Odhiambo and Fryatt.
Allen was forced to make his fourth change on 65 minutes - Sergio Hellings replacing the injured Alan Sheehan.
The Foxes made it 2-0 on 67 minutes. Substitute Hellings saw a shot saved by Tuffey, but the Partick goalkeeper was unable to hold the ball and it eventually broke to Wesolowski who fired home a well placed shot from 12 yards.
Allen made his fifth and final change with four minutes of the game remaining - Iain Hume replacing Fryatt.
The Foxes now face another three days of intensive pre-season training before they face Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Saturday (3pm).
City: Henderson, Chambers, N'Gotty (Newton 46), McAuley ©, Mattock, Stearman, Kishishev (Wesolowski 46), Clemence, Sheehan (Hellings 65), Fryatt (Hume 86), de Vries (Odhiambo 46).

Tonight was a good workout. When you come up here it is always going to be competitive. It is in the nature of the Scottish players - they have got that competitive edge. This trip was arranged before I got to Leicester, but I have been absolutely delighted with it.
I came up here 20 years ago with Queen's Park Rangers - all I can remember is being spat at by the supporters. But here today it was nice. The people over at Troon have been superb to us. And from the playing point of view it has been a great workout.
You have to remember that all of our players got up this morning at a quarter to seven. They had 6:45am alarm calls. We were on the training pitch at a quarter past seven practicing our set plays. So that was a tester. No one was late and nobody moaned. We stood around on a pitch in Ayr, which was very fresh, and got the set plays done. We then went back out at a quarter past 10 to work on the attacking plays. Again there were no moans or complaints. We were then back on the bus again to come here.
We trained last night for two and a half hours. There has been no let up, but I didn't want any excuses. I wanted all those things to be tests, if you like, of their mental strength because weak people can use the getting up at 6:45am as an excuse for failure. People can use those things for what I call 'get out clauses' - you don't play well and you don't win and the reason was because of those things I have mentioned. But fair play to the players and all the squad. The substitutes and the people who weren't playing were in the dressing room before the game getting the players ready, encouraging, supporting them and backing them. And when they came in at the end of the game all the players who weren't playing were waiting for them in the dressing room to do the same again. So I have got quite a unified and tight squad, but there is still a lot to do.
This trip has all been pre-planned a long time before I got up to Leicester, but my people have actually come up to Scotland a couple of weeks ago and everything has been checked out before we came here. People came to this ground, the hotel and the training pitch to get everything sorted. All the food, the rooms and the arrangements - everything was done. This trip was meticulously planned before we got here to make sure that there were no hiccups.
At the moment the results are important because the winning mentality is good. But there is still a lot to practice, train and work on. The staff will be sitting in front of a computer when we get back to the hotel tonight to analyse the game. We will learn from that and go through it with all the players before our next game. There is still a long way to go and there is a lot of work to do. This is by no means anywhere near how good it will have to be or how good it will be.
Tomorrow we are going clay pigeon shooting to give them a break. I am not sure if it is a good idea that I go because the players will all have guns in their hands!
Take care
Martin
Right, shoot me down in flames, but I fecking love this.... Thanks Martin Allen.

"Goalkeeper looks like a walking disaster zone, would have thought he'd cost you a few goals against better opposition. Number 3 (Mattock) was a class above everyone else on the park for me, so no surprise to see he is a star in the making. Clemence did little, played one quality crossfield ball but apart from that didn't do much.
De Vries looks like he could be useful if he stays in shape. Fryatt seemed like a bit of a thug, although in general the Leicester tactics were very physical indeed for a pre-season friendly against a team they should comfortably outclass.
Edited to add: Number 5, McAuley I presume, was also quite dirty, captained your team tonight but not afraid to lead with the elbow into an aerial challenge, even against guys 6 inches shorter than him."

"Leicester were pretty good, and it was far from their first team. Only some last-ditch defending and poor finishing kept us level for the first 20 minutes, in which we were thoroughly beasted. The two goals were eminently preventable though, the first one Harkins got caught wrong side and the second was just two goalkeeping errors in quick succession.
Was particularly impressed with Kishishev and the two boys that were brought on up front in the second half."
