Well even if it is a bunch of shit none of you have been any help!

While you have McAfee, you will always have problems. The advice given above to ditch it and replace it with one of the 'lighter', free alternatives is good and helpful.

...none of you have been any help!

How rude. The advice you've been given is the best possible advice available for your situation. Can you explain how anybody, that has taken the time to help you, could've been more helpful?

I was going to suggest Microsoft Security Essentials as a good free alternative.

But now I'm not so sure.

This afternoon it popped up with a severe alert telling me there was a password stealer on my PC. So I told it to delete the infected file. The infected file was Google Chrome (chrome.exe), which is the browser I use most.

So I then tried to reinstall Chrome, and before the installation was complete I got the same message, telling me one of the Chrome installation files is a password stealer.

I can't imagine Google is realy distributing software that contains a password stealer so it's probably a false alarm. The cynic in me is wondering whether this is a deliberate ploy by Microsoft because of the number of people who are now using Chrome instead of IE.

EDIT: just checked Google's support forum and lots of people are having the same problem. http://www.google.co.uk/support/forum/p/Chrome/thread?tid=42d6ba02d7eed070&hl=en

Back to the problem....

Have you disabled any services, or run any system speed up, or other utilty that may have done?

Google should be able to provide a list of services that Mcafee requires.

To check the ones you need are enabled, search for services in the search box of the start menu, you should be offered a program that enables you to enable/disable services. (set any that are needed to automatic)

That said, i agree your best option is to get rid. i personally use AVG.
