I was at a lower league match yesterday and a situation like this occurred:

The player realised he wasn't going to keep the ball in, so he hit the ball right into the group of substitutes for the other team.

The other team was outraged, of course, and the player was booked. Did the ref do the right thing?

On the one hand, the ball was still in play. On the other hand, it was obvious his intent was to injure another player (with the ball) and I was thinking if that could warrant a booking under 'bad sportmanship' or whatever.

Or was my dad right, as long as the ball is in play you can kick it wherever you want?

Could possible see it be given as unsporting behaviour, but I don't think it would be in the rules as such. Down to the feeling of the ref whether it constitutes unsporting behaviour.

I think the player would usually get away with it. As your dad says, if the ball is in play you can kick it wherever.

It could be considered violent conduct, which is a red card offence.

It was clearly intentional to kick it towards the bench to cause some anger/injure someone. Jeff, do you know what paragraph that says this so I can show my dad (haha)?

Sorry, didn't read your last post. "violent conduct", then.
