I always mix up Billy McKay and Billy Kee. Kee is the bald one (yes, I've seen the hair picture) with 10 goals in the first few games, right?

HUGHES WITHDRAWN FROM RESERVES
Posted on: Wed 19 Sep 2007

Striker Lee Hughes is out of tonight's reserve game against Leicester City (KO 7pm).

Hughes, 31, was originally named in the starting line-up for the Bower Fold clash but was withdrawn by boss John Sheridan prior to the squad's departure.

Hughes picked up a slight knock in training and has been rested with Saturday's crucial game at Walsall in mind.

However first teamers Reuben Hazell, JP Kalala and Michael Ricketts all play. Oldhamathletic.co.uk will be carrying a full report later this evening.

REPORT: FOXES SLIP BY SECOND STRING
Posted on: Wed 19 Sep 2007

Oldham Athletic Reserves 0
LEICESTER CITY RESERVES 3 (McKay 20, 23, Sappleton 45)
By Stu Vose at Bower Fold

Three first-half goals put paid to Latics' reserve side as they slipped to defeat against Leicester City at Bower Fold.

Foxes striker Billy McKay looked a distinct threat and caused all sorts of problems for the home defence as he grabbed an early brace, and then his strike partner Ricky Sappleton added a third in first-half injury time to seal the points.

Lee Hughes was scheduled to line up for Latics, but was withdrawn just hours before kick-off to give him an opportunity to rest a training-ground knock.

Aaron Chalmers provided a bright spot by impressing with another all-action display in the engine room, while Michael Ricketts produced some tidy touches up front but was largely starved of service. Both men drew praise from coach Lee Duxbury after the game.

Leicester could have taken the lead just before the quarter-hour when a McKay header squirmed through Josh Bell's grasp, but the referee decided the loose ball had not crossed the line as a grateful Bell dropped down to claim at the second attempt.

However, the speedy McKay wasn't to be denied, and bagged the first of his brace on 20 minutes with a close-range header after Latics failed to clear a high cross.

It was two soon afterwards when McKay raced onto a through ball and held off the attentions of Neal Trotman before clipping the ball into the corner.

McKay almost claimed his hat-trick, but was denied well by Bell after Ashley Kelly had swept Matty Wolfenden's cut-back over the bar at the other end.

Latics began to show slightly more willingness to come forward with Wolfenden and Chalmers both coming close, the latter seeing a crisp drive turned behind.

McKay had previously fired a warning shot when he sprung the offside trap only to scuff wide, and his side did grab a third in time added on at the end of the first period.

Marco Ferreira cut the ball back from the right, and Sappleton strode in to hammer an unstoppable shot beyond a helpless Bell.

Latics improved in the second half and battled well despite the deficit. They created the better of the chances, with Michael Ricketts unlucky to see a well-struck free-kick fly just wide of goal.

Meanwhile Leicester keeper Carl Pentney did well to gety down to Matty Wolfenden's curling shot after Ashley Kelly's deflected free-kick had spun loose to the striker in the box, and Ricketts shaved the crossbar with a powerful effort following good midfield interplay.

Neal Trotman thought he'd reduced the arrears with a towering header in injury time, only for the linesman to sum up the hosts' evening by virtue of a raised offside flag.

Interesting to hear who set up the goals, as all 3 came from good balls from the midfield/wings it sounds like with McKay having another header apparently not quite crossing the line... whoever it is that can put these balls into the box (presumably Ferreira and Kaebi) needs to be in the first team a bit more!

McKay Opens Up Latics
Posted on: Thu 20 Sep 2007

Youngster Billy McKay was on the mark twice as City's reserve side registered a 3-0 victory over Oldham Athletic at Stalybridge Celtic on Wednesday evening.

The win means Leicester have now posted two wins from their four Pontin's Central League fixtures to date this season.

A number of City first team squad members got a run out on the night - including Paul Henderson, Marco Ferreira and Shaun Newton.

All the goals came in the first half - with Ricky Sappleton grabbing the third on the night.

City first team coach Gerry Taggart said: "It was a good first half performance and we were especially pleased with the link up play between Billy and Ricky up front.

"The attitude shown by the whole of the squad on the evening was commendable. It was a thoroughly deserved win."

City boss Gary Megson and assistant Frank Burrows were also in attendance on the evening.

City: Henderson, Kaebi, Garner (Rowe-Turner), Magunda, Maybury, Ferreira (Cox), Hellings, King, Beswick, McKay (Chambers), Sappleton.
