Possible that World Cup matches could be played at the KP in 2015

The home of Leicester City Football Club has been selected to proudly represent one of England’s true rugby heartlands, as the city of Leicester bids to become a host venue for Rugby World Cup 2015.

The 2015 Rugby World Cup is scheduled to be the eighth Rugby World Cup, the quadrennial rugby union world championship. The tournament is scheduled to be hosted by England from 18 September to 31 October 2015. Twickenham Stadium will host the final. Cardiff's 74,500-seater Millennium Stadium in Wales will also be used.

So this will mean some upheaval for City in whatever League we are playing in at that time (hopefully our 3rd season in the Premier League) but do we welcome our odd shaped ball friends with open arms.

Not sure if this should be in "other sports" or here but it does effect City so thought it more appropriate on here.

I went to New Zealand vs Italy at Welford Road in 1991

they had to put in temporary stands to get it to 16,000

if Leicester gets some god awful Tonga vs Georgia game...why not have Welford Road?

So the further rebuilding of the Tigers ground would seem to have hit the buffers.

Tigers are not happy

Welford Road, which has been Leicester's home for 120 years, has been left off the long list of 17 venues published by the tournament organisers, England Rugby 2015.

The Leicester chairman, Peter Tom, was both astounded and angered by the snub. "We are hugely disappointed to learn that Welford Road will not play a part in England's hosting of the Rugby World Cup in 2015," he said. "It is home to the best-supported and most successful club in the history of the professional game in this country and, as such, we believe it is worthy of Rugby World Cup status.
"It is that kind of heritage and dedication to the development of the game that makes the name of Leicester Tigers and Welford Road stadium known throughout the rugby-playing world.

"Welford Road is the largest designated club rugby stadium in England, an iconic home of the sport in this country and home to the most successful club in the history of a thriving, competitive and successful league structure yet it will not be at the table when it comes to hosting a global rugby event in this country.

"That the organisers of RWC2015 do not think this an appropriate venue for its fixtures is disappointing and confusing both for the professional club game in this country and for its supporters.".

Tournament organisers believe the 32,000-seater King Power Stadium has more suitable off-field facilities than Welford Road

They are chasing the money. The Rugby World Cup struggles to make a profit but the England bid team told the IRB that they would make a good profit on this World Cup (worth mentioning the RWC in 2019 is expected to make a loss as it is in Japan).

.

The IRB, Premier League and Football League have already spoken about to having a two to three week gap in September where no Football will take place. This would be the Group Stage period and largely based around the International weekend.

Apparently Wenger has already stated that he will not allow any rugby matches to be played at The Emirates Stadium.

Seems a very stragne decision considering the development going on with Welford road.

I think we should have both venues involved, feck it just hold the entire tournement in Leicester.

Not that we can even deal with 2 games kicking off at different times any other week.

Tigers fans being big about it.
Far too much in London as usual. Kingpower or whatever former Crisp Packet in Leicester is now called is a vandal proofed concrete toilet with all the atmosphere of the dark side of the moon. Only the RFU could leave out the largest club ground in the country next door with supporter friendly facilities. Agree Milennium Stadium allows easier access to big games for SW/Midlands- best stadium too!

Can't believe that the crisp bowl is picked over Welford Road. Anyone who was at the game where Tigers played South Africa will know how Welford Road works.
The Olympic stadium and others in this list sits the crowd a good distance from the pitch and whilst this might work for some sports it doesn't for rugby.

I can believe it, Mr.Tigers fan. 10,000 more seats...that's the major reason.

The point about the crowd being far from the action is very debatable on Rugby. Atmosphere maybe better for Mr.Hardcore on the Crumbie Terrace. Casual Fan who the IRB/RFU are targetting for wants a seat where he can see the whole pitch and not sitting on a wooden bench.

a guy from the world cup organising committee has just been on the radio said Welford road didn't get any games because the pitch is to small, also kept calling grounds the Leicester City stadium and Brighton community stadium etc, no doubt due to world cup sponsers

a bit rich having the atmosphere at the KP called into question from Tigers' fans...

their main song "Tiiiiiiiiiiiiigeeeeeeeers" is almost a lullaby

Brian Moore when talking about the Welford road crowd, said they couldn't sing anything with more than two syllables

No football!? To make way for rugby!? They can **** right off!

I think it's funny that they'd rather use our ground than Welford Road, but really I'd prefer it if they just played egg chasing in the park and left us alone.

Apparently the pitch at welford road is too narrow for international rugby. Or so I was told today.

I think it's obvious that our grass is just that little bit greener

I do feel a bit of sympathy for the Tigers fans. They are after all one of the best, if not the best, teams in the country. They have the largest stadium purpose built for rugby and they have contributed a lot to the game in England.

Roles reversed and this was happening to the Lestoh I'd be pretty peeved.
