Because they thought that was what Cooper was going to do. He was a devotee as a youth England manager and initially at Swansea.

When he came in, he was talking about continuing the style from the previous season and just adding aspects to it.

I maintain that much of the trouble Cooper had was trying to appease the players/owner about style of play when it became apparent that we couldn't do it effectively at this level.
