Scholes retires

He was one of the best around at his prime. I agree on your point about the national team.

A model pro and a good solid family man too.

Just what one of his colleagues could have been remembered as if he hadn't been a twat.

Probably my favourite English player in my lifetime. Best passer of the ball anyway.

End of an era. Not too many of the fledglings left what with Savage retiring as well. :icon_wink

Agreed, for me on a list with Sheringham and Gascoigne as the most technically gifted englishmen. The team should have been built around Scholes, instead he ended up shunted out to the left wing.

I'm a tiny bit too young to remember Gazza and Sheringham in their primes really, only really caught the end of their careers.

I'd add Beckham to that list though as well, even though for some reason people seem to want to say he's overrated these days. He could cut a pass open with one ball.

100% with you (and Miles). Although, I remember Sheringham better than I do Gazza. Was a big fan of Teddy.

Shame Scholes' last game was one where he lost and barely made an impact, but what a fantastic player he's been. Sad to see him retire, but they all have to some time!

He never did learn to tackle.

Oh dear! I clearly meant "He could cut a defence open with one pass"

For all his 'interesting' personality traits, he was a fantastic footballer to watch. Other than Bergkamp, he gave the best performance I've seen a visiting player make at Filbert Street and that was when he was at Everton and supposedly not the player he once was. Truly different to anything we've (England) produced for many years.

On the flip side was his appearance at the Steve Walsh testimonial. That was at the peak of his 'where did it all go wrong' phase. He even bought his 'celeb' muckers like Chris Evans along to that one.
