apart from the two central defenders, we didnt look in the full back postions again.

Johansson is slow and an able header of a ball so it makes sense to have him standing on the half way line marking inivisble attackers for our corners.

I didn't get why we continued with the short corners, is there any point in them??

I also didn't understand why Levi was taking the corners, his set pieces have been crap!!

I was pleasantly surprised that despite his 31 years Newton could give some of our players a 10yd start in a 25yd race!

Obviously not the instant game winner signing though that we all daydream/pray is just around the corner!

that will be in the summer! There will be 200 threads in may, june and july guessing who is coming in.... its gonna be a long summer!

For our corners in the second half, Leeds left nobody upfield and we still had 3 defenders back!! Half the time including Johnasson who would give us more height in the box and is hardly going to catch anyone if leeds broke anyway :018: :icon_roll

I was saying that and then for their corners we had every player back including Porter:icon_conf Surely you'd leave him up field:102:

The idea behind having someone come short for corners is sound - it just needs to be implemented correctly (like in the MON days).

Say the team defending the corner sticks one man on the half way line and the team taking the corner leaves two men on the half way line. The number of attacking players available for the corner is 11 - 1 (GK) - 2 (defenders) - 1 (corner taker) = 7. The number of defending players is 1 GK and 9 outfield players.

Consider the following situations:

1) No-one comes short and the ball goes into the box as normal. 7 attackers vs 9 defenders plus the GK (7/9 = 0.778 and 7/10 = 0.7).

2) Someone comes short and two defenders move out of the area to deal with the potential short corner (reasonable probability of happening). Putting the ball straight into the box now leaves 6 attackers vs 7 defenders + the GK in the box (6/7 = 0.857 and 6/8 = 0.75). This is the best situation.

3) Someone comes short and one defender moves out to deal with the short corner. Three possibilities.
i) Play it short and the two men should be able to put something together against one man if they're not complete muppets.
ii) Play it into the box gives 6 vs 8 plus the GK (6/8 = 0.75 and 6/9 = 0.667). Not as good as 1).
iii) As two men haven't come to deal with the short corner, have the guy who came short go back into the box - return to 1). Nothing has been lost.

The attacking side can of course choose to have their worst header of the ball come short whereas who comes short for the defending team is dependent on whether they have got their man to man sorted, or if they are playing zone etc...

Having someone come short can also take the first defender watching the near post flick on/front post out of position allowing for some further complexity in tactics for the attacking team.

Madness I tells thee. If you leave a player up it means the opposition need 2 back which not only reduces the threat to your goal but actually means you have a channel to get the ball up field.
