lazzy, I agree with most of what you say. The club will spend as you say, within reason, but as you also say I think there's been no point rushing when mainly what's been available so far are free transfers. I don't think we need to wait to see what income we've got first - I think MM has a good idea already (& its not that hard to guestimate how many season tickets we'll sell) which is my only small point of disagreement. The other point of information is that whilst we could not afford players on a fee in the recent past, our managers actually had, because of our fan base, a pretty good wages budget and could compete with signing on fees and wages. A coouple of years ago we had the 5th highest wages budget in the division. Even last season I bet it was top 8. We're probably back to top 4 or 5 on wages under MM - and with transfer money to spend to. The latter, as you rightly say, is something we have not really had. Even now we need to move our expectations down a little bit on exactly how much but I would guess it will be about £2m-£2.5m

Also just read on the Mail website a story about Hendrie from 20th. MM apparently wants to spend the majority of the £8 mill on wages rather than signing on fees. Apparently offered Hendrie £20,000 a week to come to the Walkers!

SHARP STILL AN IRON PLAYER
Posted on: Fri 29 Jun 2007

Striker Billy Sharp is still a S****horpe United player, the Club have confirmed.

Reports had suggested that the Iron have agreed a deal to sell Sharp to Sheffield United, but the Club have confirmed that this is not the case.

"We have given permission for Billy to talk to a number of Clubs. Sheffield United have not made any offer for Billy as far as I'm aware," explained general manager Jamie Hammond.

Sharp arrived from Sheffield United for £100,000 in 2005 and the striker has scored over 50 goals for the Iron in his two seasons at Glanford Park.

The Iron have previously received offers from Norwich, Wolves and Sheffield Wednesday for the player who notched 32 goals last season.

Wh do we keep going on about him... WE ARE NOT GOING TO SIGN HIM.

I just read all of the pages of this thread because I thought for it to go on this long something must be happening...

page after page of bollocks about a player we are NOT going to sign and a player we are not even interested in signing.

Can we get over it.

lol - I've not even mentioned Sharpe, however, £2 million is far too much, esp for a player who struggled to score at this level previously. I'd rather take a free punt at Cort. :icon_cool
