Just rebooted the server and everything should be fine again now.

If anyone's really interested in what was wrong, there was a process that was hanging and hogging all the processor time, so it slowed everything else down.

The program with the problem was nothing to do with this site, it was running a stats program for another site.

I don't scan for anything during posting. Why would I want to do that when the forum has a perfectly good search function?

JF has a theory that you have perl scripts running that track certain words and when they occur you come online.

About 12.35 the forum went very slow and has speeded up a bit by now.

Slow again now. About to reboot which should sort the problem out for now.

The problems with the server are due to one of my other sites which is using a lot of the server's resources. I'll have a look at it today to see if I can improve things.

It didn't sort itself. The errors happened because I was rebooting the server, then once it rebooted everything was OK again.

I'm having to reboot several times a day at the moment, I'll hopefully be able to fix the problem permanently some time today, but the site will be down for a while when that happens.
