Panic surrounding the swine flu pandemic is out of proportion to the risk it presents, according to one academic.

He described the situation as "the yearly pandemic scare ritual".

Dr Brian Brown, an expert in health communications at De Montfort University in Leicester, does not believe the danger presented by the disease matches up to the hype surrounding it.

He laid the finger of blame on a "culture of worry" that has developed during the past 30 years.

Dr Brown called for a solid health infrastructure, rather than the "knee-jerk creation of helplines and websites".
