Despite being one of the first things RK said as manager, whatever we do we've got square pegs in round holes. If we strictly use players in their natural/preferred/best position, we'd end up with something like:
Hendo/Rab/Logan, take your pick really
RB - Stearman (don't think he'll switch to centre back for a while, if ever) with Maybury as cover
CB - McCarthy with Nissa as cover
CB - Kisnorbo with Kenton and McAuley as cover
LB - Tiatto with Sheehan as cover
RM - Sylla with Low as cover
CM - Williams with Hughes as cover
CM - Johnson or Weso
LM - Porter (but doesn't he normally play centrally?) or Tiatto (defender)
ST - Fryatt/Hume
ST - O'Grady/Hammond/Dodds
Not that we hadn't already worked it out, but that shows us exactly where the squad is strong... and where the problems are: right midfield (still - if Low isn't the answer) left back (unless Sheehan finally gets it together and breaks through), and left mid, a position which is not the natural one for any player in our squad!
Unless it's a deal too good to turn ignore, the next three additions to the squad must be in these positions IMO, followed by a keeper. All that probably won't happen until next summer at the earliest, so we're going to have to keep banging those square pegs in somewhere all season...
Of course, we could go 3-5-2. If the players don't fit into the system, maybe we should look at fitting the system around our players. And 3-5-2 would accommodate our "big" players (ha!) far better than 4-4-2.
