Maybe they were out of phase. That means they were invisible - if Science Fiction is to be believed.
It also means they couldn't interact with anything that's in phase. Apart from floors. People who are out of phase on Star Trek, Stargate etc never fall through the floor, but can walk through walls :icon_conf
