The hysterically annoying and totally unfounded, but traditional, January 2025 rumours thread.

The club will assess the end of the season situation at the end of the season. I think we're being more-or-less forced into that short-term, but I'd say pragmatic, thinking.

Tbf, it must be a nightmare situation to try and plan in. The club have to plan and position financially in the event of relegation all whilst supporting the manager in their attempts to keep the club up. Given the revenue differences, that's not an easy task. One to stay positive yet but be aware of the possibility.

Keeping Cannon on loan at Stoke for the entire season makes more sense to me, he gets properly fit and also gets to know the championship, it's not entirely unfeasible he scores 20 goals this season and that would be a huge asset if we were relegated, we would have a ready made No9.
If we miraculously stay up and decided that we didn't need him those clubs that are supposedly after him would pay even more if they got promoted. Win Win.

Obviously if we have to sell him to free up £1.2 million Leicester are truly in the poo

Doesn’t this tell you something?
Yes. That Maresca didn't have any interest in a striker with pace & physicality with the style of play he wanted from us. He looked fine to me in the rare run outs he had.
I have zero faith in finding anyone better with our record. Particularly considering the shit we've got ourselves into by pissing money up the wall. He at least deserves an opportunity.
If we had a world class striker & a more than capable backup I'd be Ok with letting him go. but we don't. Play him. If he's shit, fair enough but it's not as if we're overflowing with glittering prizes up front is it?

It must be an absolute nightmare.

I say we go for it. Sign the absolute best we can. And if we go down, we at least have a squad that has proper quality to try to get us back up again.

If go down, we might realistically have an embargo. If we don’t sign some talent now, and some of our best talent leave, and we have an embargo, we’re ****ing screwed.

This is our opportunity to get the best players in that we can. A few quality additions for good value. And as shown against QPR, we’re probably a bit better than the Championship level with this squad.

We absolutely must not doom ourselves and look back wondering what might have been if we had just made an effort in this window.

Why did he play Vardy then?
Because Vardy was obviously first choice. He didn't want two versions of the same style of striker (or 3 if you believe that Daka is also quite similar).
With Vardy now unlikely to be here next season why not give a chance to a 22 year old who plays in a similar way? Giving young players with a point to prove, hungry to make an impression used to be our thing. We need to get back to it, especially as we no longer have the money to spunk on Slimanis, Musas etc.
Getting back to that pattern is the best chance we have of preventing the club spiralling into oblivion.

Totally agree with this. Vardy is King. But you’re never going to have someone take a chance if they haven’t been given it.

We will miss Vardy immensely but very quickly, we’ll have a new lead striker once they’ve been given a proper chance. If we’re down then why not Cannon?

If Vardy wasn’t at Leicester, then one of the strikers we’ve signed across the years would’ve done much better than they ended up doing.

I’d love for us to stay up purely to bookend Vardy’s career with us. He keeps us up on a clean ending.
