A nice surprise for next pre-season. We are part of the international champions cup.

Is this a statement of intent for the future or just a group of clubs being nice and caving in to media to let the little kids play in the same tournament as them?

I'm not sure how I feel about this, it feels like pandering to the media rather than actually accepting that we are genuinely doing well.

Whelan said the fact City were invited to participate demonstrates how far the club has come.

"An invitation to participate in the International Champions Cup highlights the significant impression the club is making on an international audience," she said.

"We are delighted to be involved in this year's competition. It will form part of a carefully planned pre-season programme that has worked extremely well in recent years – including a week-long training camp in Austria and selected domestic friendly fixtures.
