A younger generation will remember Honor Blackman as a Bond girl However, her real importamce was as Cathy Gale in The Avengers. Before The Avengers a leading lady was there to be rescued from the villains. Cathy Gale was no damsel in distress and was capable of beating up the villains. This was absolutely new. Most people seem to prefer Diana Rigg but for me Honor Blackman was the best Avengers girl.
Here is a question most of my generation will not know and younger members will not care about. What were The Avengers avenging? The answer is the murder of Ian Hendrie's wife. In the first series Ian Hendrie had the lead role and Patrick MacNee was the supporting actor. MacNee became far more popular than Hendrie. When Hendrie dropped out it was decided to continue the series with MacNee as the lead.
Many people believe that The Avengers was TVs answer to James Bond. In fact The Avengers pre-dated Bond

Boyhood hero of mine (everybody's really). Extra poignant how many of the photos of him in his pomp were alongside other F1 and British drivers who died young.
