im not an actual marine biologist, to get a job in the field you need a post grad.

There has to be a way into a job in that field if you really wanted it.
Don't defeat yourself before you've even started.

i have been trying to get into conservation and wildlife/animal behaviour for ages. Its catch 22 most employers want at least 3 years experience, which you cant get unless you have a job

Write every sanctuary in the country & offer to work for food & board.

You'll be starting your new career within a couple of weeks.
Then after 3 years you won't need to go to any employer with your experience under your belt because you'll already have a job. :icon_wink

thats the thing i cant afford to volunteer, and thats why its hard to get into the field. People with money volunteer to do it

I was only having this conversation with somebody a couple of days ago.

Why the **** do so many people want to be sports Journos?

To be part of something (ie working at football club behind the scenes) of which a 100,000 fans can't get to.

Secondly, I think the travel aspect would be interesting. In simple terms, you are getting paid to do what you normally do with your mates every Saturday night, Sunday morning or afternoon. You analyse a game of football.

The thing is reality of being a real journalist who researchs etc. is a very rare thing in sport. Sports journalism is all about opinion, it's very rare to see piece of sport journalism based on facts. I'd go as far too say there is better stuff written on the internet and blogs etc. about sport than there is in the majority of newspapers.

Surely an Airline Steward and a part time Football Steward or F1 Marshall offer the same opportunites :102:

Well, I'd say all three things you have mentioned are like less glamourous versions really and the pay is awful.

But as I said earlier you'd be getting paid for something you love to do (which the 3 example you mentioned wouldn't). It's a hobby which would overlap into work - you know how trainspotters want to be involved with trains.

Which takes us back to the question, but I'll re-word it. Why do people think they will "love" being a sports journo?

Personally, I just believe it's the new boys dream as opposed to the Soldier, Pilot, Football Player, Fireman etc, etc.

Yep, I think that's what my son is finding appealing about it at the mo.

However, I think I'll just show him this thread to show him how many don't make it and to stick to his previous career choice :icon_wink

It's possible but it's hard work. The legwork starts now...as I found to my peril it's not what you know, it's who you know.

Agreed - growing with mass media exposure to sport as made it that. The opportunity to travel from one place in Europe to the next I would find desireable.
