Town and Village Twins

Is there any point or benifit to a town or village twinning with a foreign one? What is the point?

I also get the impression its more popular around leicestershire, i'v seen it elsewhere but i don't think there are many places around leicester that don't have a twin.

I'v never been to france or germany where most of the twinned places are, does anybody know if they put up the signs?

At school I went on trips to both the German and french twin towns and they did have signs up. Most french towns have signs as you drive into them, they seem particularly keen.

Some places over here must really struggle to persuade anywhere decent to have them.

It is nationwide, but my perception has been it seems to be less common elsewhere, though i haven't been looking.

I know Hinckley and Harborough have twins too, well Harborough was trying to set something up a few years ago at least.

Leicestershire is twinned with Kilkenny as well, but it isn't on that list.
