The Monks ? - Nice legs shame about the face? :icon_bigg

Anyway,
Dinosaur Jr have done the same with the US since the late 80's

Go on then, tell me I'm completly wrong...

Definately a different band - the one I meant was the garage rock band from the mid 60s not the pub rock band from the 70s

Dinosaur Jr were without doubt influential but in were in turn very heavily influenced themselves by Neil Young, Husker Du and Sonic Youth. Is it me or does every song by Ash sound like a bad Dinosaur Jr cover.

not a band but Rufus Wainwright and Jack Johnson

Not sure they are underrated as they both have been successful stateside, especially Jack Johnson - Rufus has always been a critics darling both sides of the Atlantic :102:

I'll go with my usual shout for Ed Harcourt, a fine British artist who has released 3 albums of quality.

can anyone think of any bands who have influenced many but never got much recognition?

Rush.

Neil Peart is widely regarded as one of the best drummers ever, and many drummers have cited him as inspiration.

Geddy Lee is also often rated highly as a basist.

Alex Lifeson is amazing, he is the only guitarist yet he makes it sound like there are two guitars. fantasitic. again many cite him as inspiration.

But as a band they never get recognition. they have just celebrated their 30th aniversary. but have neer been big, because they refused to sell out. in their early days they made a lot of 'Epics' (20 minute long songs) which were awsome but not radio friendly. when they were pressured to get more commercial friendly they made the song 'Spirit of Radio' which speaks out against the influence that the labels have on the music being created. it is somewhat ironic that this prove to be their biggest commercial success to date!
