A cable router doesn't have a modem built in because Virgin supply you with one of their own.

It is just a router you need rather than a modem/router.

to be fair Spion I have no idea what I'm talking about :icon_lol:
all I know is that I am fed up of having to drag a cable across my lounge to my laptop :icon_lol:

Others may well give you links to cheaper products, but ebuyer have this one which isn't a bad buy.

Yep, got it one. See, you're not confused at all :icon_wink

The cable that currently goes from your modem to your PC, will connect instead to the router. The router then shares that connection with however many PCs that you want to connect, either by another Ethernet cable or wirelessly.

ok, so it shouldnt have any effect on speeds or whatever? Its just one laptop I want to connect wirelessly (so I can be a lazy spog and surf anywhere)

Nope. Just think of it as a hub for your modem, that lets you connect more than one PC to it.

And, presuming that your laptop is already wifi-enabled, you can avoid the cable as cheaply as this.
