Warwickshire make approach for Taylor

Inevitable that he will leave in the fairly near future.

The one thing that puzzles me is if and once he is centrally contracted by the ECB and his availability for county cricket is curtailed - then how much value will he have to Warks or anyone else? Or does Ashley Giles think he will make the ODI squad but will struggle to make a test squad?

I suppose the answer is that Warks can afford to have players who have a promotional value to the club even if they rarely play.
Our finances are so poor that we can't afford luxuries.

Although I'm not keen on T20, my guess is that the only significant improvement that Leics can make in terms of gate revenue is through investment in the squad for that format of the game. I really believe that even if we were highly successful in the Championship that it wouldn't make that much difference to attendances - there is just a limit to the people who are interested and able to watch the 4 day game.

I am a member at LCCC but actually support WCCC (sort of but can't be bothered to go to Birmingham to watch cricket) and it seems strange to me, currently Warks are getting beaten regularly because their 2 best batsmen aren't available (Trott and Bell) and their idea to fix this is sign another batsman that will never be available. I know that counties get compensated for centrally contracted players but how this makes up for losing the matches I don't know.

Counties 'producing' England players also get paid even after they have moved on - e.g. Leicestershire in the case of Broad.

As I say, in the case of Taylor, I can only guess that Ashley Giles who is an England selector himself, is calculating that Taylor won't become a fully contracted England player as in being a regular test player.

My gut feeling is that he will find it much easier to break into the ODI side than the test arena - but it could be a costly move for Warks - but then they can probably easily afford it.

As inevitable as this may seem it is still very disappointing. But then again if Broad had stayed with us, we'd have hardly seen him anyway.

I think Taylor could make it at test level, but there isn't an obvious test vacancy at the moment and there are others also in line. So Giles could be deciding there is a short-term benefit, hence the wish to buy out his contract now.

I did sense a bit of media stirring in the article though, with all that stuff about him being unsettled.

If he is unsettled, I would guess that batting at number 6 on Saturday evening wouldn't have made him any less unsettled.

I would hope that he is mature enough to realise that a batting order is horses for courses and that his role is as a 'finisher'.

If 'finisher' means that you are likely to get only a couple of overs batting then I somehow doubt if many ambitious specialist batters would be over keen whether its T20 or whatever..

I'm not saying that the batting order was wrong incidentally just giving a thought on the usual reactions of ambitious good players.

Dagnall reporting that we have offered him a new contract and hopeful he will sign. He tweeted the other day that Leics confirmed a bid for another player, but no formal approaches for Taylor.

But he'll be unavailable in the CC next week captaining England Lions!

Was wondering today how much of the attempt to keep him here will involve offering captaincy experience, hence his recent deputising.

I thought the same re: captaincy.

I think the more games he plays for England the less likely he would be to leave. We couldn't really afford to offer him a contract or opportunities to compete with the top sides.

I kind of think he might stay for another season, would definifely help if we won the T20, but if he doesn't become an england regular next season then he will probably leave.

I would be looking for the exit asap.

Who do you think he might replace in the current England batting line up? Would his chances be better if he was playing under the eye of an England selector (Ashley Giles)?

I think he will probably go at the end of the season. One of the additional factors for saying that is the at least marginal advantage of playing in Division 1. His first class average this season is good but not mega good. i would have thought he might like to prove one or two points by competing at the bit higher level of Division 1.

Top scoring again for Lions.....Trott's replacement?

They've gone with Bopara as Trott's replacement.

The selectors are always very conservative in these matters - plus Bopara (like Trott) can bowl a few overs.

Leicestershire is - and always has been (except for the Illingworth/ Gower era) a very, very unfashionable county. Old supporters will remember how Maurice Hallam in his prime found it impossible to get selected.

I'm afraid if Taylor wants an England career his best move would be to go to Warks - and I say that as someone who doesn't like Warks or Edgbaston.

Watching Skysports news, this morning, and I didn't realise how close he is to a call up.
Basically between him and Bopara.
County will do very well to hold onto him after this season, especially after some of the apathetic county game performances.
Any aspiring player, whatever sport, would want to play with the best. As England strive to become number 1 in the test arena, which english young batsmen wouldn't want to be a part of it.
(All a bit like Lineker going to Everton many centuries ago ;))

We will certainly find out over the next 5 or so weeks re Taylor's intentions.

The t20 success can't mask the fact that we have generally played some pretty dreadful cricket this season as those of us who regularly watch it know only too well. Personally I think Grace Road is a really relaxed and friendly place to watch county cricket and if the weather is good the poor performances don't totally bother me as much as perhaps they should.

It's a tricky one for Taylor because moving counties could affect his form - but I would have thought that the advantage of playing in Division 1 would edge the matter. If Bopara is the main obstacle to being ' the next cab in the line' then playing at the higher level might help.
