What a summer so far, thanks sven and chairman.

You can spin it the other way just as easily.

Schmeichel - a keeper dropped by a top club, part of one of the worst back 5's in the division last season.

St Ledger - relegated.

Danns - part of a struggling team, once gained promotion and immediately cut loose.

Peltier - lower league.

Nugent - barndoor at stages of his career.

There's possible doubts with all five. Competent signings yes. Enough to get my dick hard? No.

Down to earth with a resounding smash :icon_lol:

Alternatively

Peltier - nowhere near the class of Naughton
St Ledger - not as good as Vitor or Mee
Danns - no improvement on the King/Wellens/Abe combination
Nugent - should not even be mentioned in the same sentence as Yakubu
schmeichel - undoubtedely better than Weale, but still basically shit

So have we genuinely improved upon the team that wasn't good enough last term ?

Not by a feckin' long way, matey

hopefully much better to come....

Sven has done very well in the transfer market since taking over. Acquiring Vassell, Danns and Nugent without paying fees. Also getting Bamba, St Ledger, Peltier and Schmeichel for a total outlay of £3-3.5m. On the other side, he's sold Hobbs and Fryatt for about £2m.

A top drawer defender and striker for serious cash are in the offing - ideally the likes of Mills and Maynard. In addition, I'd expect 3-4 loans of quality young premiership or overseas players.

All in all, he's on target to turn an okay Championship standard squad into the nucleus of a decent Premiership one at a transfer cost of less than £10M. Not bad in this day and age that.

Sven, Top and Vichai are all doing a terrific job.

Great post.

The attitude of some LCFC fans does p**s me off at times. It's a long boring summer, and I'm all for those who look forward to, and have optimism for, the club's season ahead.

I don't know what some people expect at times, just because we have cash doesn't mean the players will choose us. We're a mid-table Championship side, that's the truth of it, signing decent players at this level. I'm not going to judge any of them until I see them play for us, but trust Sven with the players he's bringing in.

DJ couldn't hit a barn door for us but scored 10+ for B'Pool last year in the Prem. Sometimes a change of scenery works wonders for a player. Good luck to all the newbies, I'm definitely optimistic for next year.

Good lord....is this what they call sense? I always thought that was a river...

.

In my opinion that is impossible.

Hopefully, we will continue to see the strengthening of the squad to the point that we have a more than decent chance of promotion - but to talk about the "nucleus of a decent Premier League squad at this stage is beyond me. I don't think there is any intent to go that far at this stage. I guess that if we get promotion that the owners would feel able to invest in a different class of player.

I believe the secret of a great manager, ( and Sven still has to prove this), is not just bringing in good players at great value prices (thank God he pulled the plug on CMS), but picking players who play even better with their new team-mates. Look at Bamba who was doing nothing in Scotland, but suddenly is great down here, so much so that in a few months his valuation goes from £250,000 to £2m.

There is a pattern to Sven's signings. They are battlehardened players who will not need time to adjust to the Championship. They have young legs and pace. I would guess that they are not as quiet as the players last year since that was something Sven complained about.
An opposing manager (it may have been Warnock) once said that the thing he liked about Nigel Pearson's team was there were no prima donnas. The same is surely true here. It was interesting that Sven checked with Trapattoni about St Ledger's character. Some of them will perhaps face competition for places that they never had at their last club.

It is extremely difficult to come in during mid-season - experienced managers such as Megson and Holloway failed. Even O'Neill struggled. Sven did very well patching up a team that was bottom with what free agents and loan signings he could get. All this being done as one match relentlessly followed another. Now he has time. I am sure that getting new players in is only part of what Sven will be doing this season. Books such as Sven On Football show how he tries to get a team that is better than the sum of its players.

I am optimistic. So there are going to be other good teams in the Championship. Good - since when was sport supposed to be easy.

Lazio fans I spoke to in Rome about eight years ago certainly thought Sven was a great manager. At the time I was reminded of the way Forest fans spoke about Clough.

I'll never understand the thinking of anyone who thinks Sven is anything but a great manager. No legitimate argument puts him in any other category.

Yeah but he never won the world cup did he. Forget everything else, that's what most remember.

Sven's signings remind me of O'Neil's, good and solid with some quality.

What i think could stand us apart from the rest in this division will ultimately be down to whether Sven can make the sum of the squad perform better than the individuals and gel a team.

I'm excited about the coming season, what is not to be excited about?

QPR didn't have a team of top names or seasoned Prem stars last season, nor did Norwich. It's about the right players for the team and getting them to play together as much as anything.

Can't argue against his record, can argue against his transfer record though. Last time he spent some money, there was a lot of misses. I am not negative, just not swept up in optimism. I think Nugent and St. Ledger could be very good signings. Peltier has been excellent when I've watched him play but he's very prone to a booking or two. Main concern is Schmeichel, dont rate him tbh.
