"The occasional hint of genius" is an abuse of language. Amidst some of his poor play there were moments when he looked Premier League quality. Genius? Genius is Matthews, Di Stefano and Charlton or in the modern game Zidane and Ronaldo.

I'm not disagreeing that 'genius' isn't overused, but using 'occasional' and 'hint' implies quite a distance from genius.

Surely Genius is totally removed from what average or good people can do/achieve? A hint of genius? Do you mean it was great or superb? Something that good players can do occasionally? A genius can do their stuff all the time. Is a hint of genius like saying someone is a bit pregnant?
