Yakubu

Apparently, a deal was struck a while ago with Everton for £3.5m. The stumbling block was not price but Yakubu's wages and alleged reluctance to drop down to the Championship

Far too much money for him in my opinion, especially if his supposed real age is accurate.

If Maynard doesn't want to come, then £4m for Yakubu is a decent bit of business imo. He'll bang in goals in this division for a couple of years, and if we can't reach the promised land in the next 2 years then we have obviously got problems elsewhere.

I assume that he is waiting for a better or similar offer from a Premier League club.

I'm not at all sure that he is any longer a Premier Leagues class striker - that said he is likely to score a fair quota of goals in our league so if the owners have the cash to splash then he probably fills the obvious gap for a striker. The problem is that his value could drop to next to nothing in the next season or so - he's a luxury item feom a business view point.

The rumours flying around are saying we're back in for him but for £4 mill. Far too much money for him in my opinion

If he can continue his goal ratio of last season then I'd be very happy with £4mil for Yakubu. It wasn't just him scoring either, it was him creating goals and space for others as well, we were scoring goals for fun at the end of last season when he was here (it's just a shame we were conceding them at a similarly high rate). If he scores the goals which get us promoted he'll have repaid that fee back 20 times over.

28 I think, but he must be at least 31 IMO.

If we were going to pay over 5 million for Nicky Maynard, who potentially could be injured half the season and will score as many goals as Yakubu, then get Yakubu for a million pounds less.

Bristol City fan on another forum saying rumours are they've accepted an offer for Maynard and this Yakubu rumour was just a negotiating ploy to stop them dawdling and accept the bid, similar to how Liverpool accepted the bid for Konchesky when they saw we were in talks with Masilela.

I did some digging myself, the claims are when he was 25 the real age was supposedbly around 31-32. Which would be about 34-35 now. Some interesting pages I read, many claiming that its common for nigerian players to fake their ages, kanu another example. Even moyes made a public comment about his age. Funny enough yak's form for everton dropped shortly after that comment.

However the basis of the claims was simply based on how the player looks, that to me is far from reliable so its hard to take serious, eg. I often got told when I was 19 I looked like a 40 year old.

It doesn't matter whether he is 28, 46 or 33 as long as he performs. His form dropping at Everton was more to do with a lengthy injury than getting past his best.

Why lie about your age though? I don't understand, surely the UK government would check with the Nigerian Government before granting them an NI card anyway?
