yes but you will not be able to down/upload at speeds anywhere near 2mbps because there are a number of users that will be using the same 2mbps service as you and it is shared between you, internet speeds are very misleading becuase if you read the fine print of your agreement with them it will say it offers speeds of 'upto 2mbps', its not just BT all are the same.

Hang on... one minute you're telling me I can't get faster than 56K and now you're a BT Broadband expert? I regularly get transfers of over 200KB/s... Seems pretty close to 2Mbps to me.

no im not an expert but im right that your internet, along with everyone elses broadband is shared, and by the way 200kbps is only 1848kbps short of 2 meg as there are 1024kb is 1mb :098:

you are confusing bits with bytes there, EMC did say he is getting 200 kB/s that's kilo Bytes.

The expected range for a 2 Meg BT line is 400-2000 kbps

That's why I said OVER 200KB/s

well you are saying that you regularly get download speeds of 10%+ of your maximum capacity.

maccy, your getting confused, there are 8 bits in a byte, then 1024 bytes in a kb, 1024kb in 1mb, 1024mb in 1gb and so on, 200kb is as previously stated just under 10% of 2mb

kbps= kilo bits per second

kB/s= kilo bytes per second

No it's you that are getting confused with your cases

200KB/s is 200x8 Kbps but anyway... I think it's pretty obvious here who is out of their depth :098:

ok so i have not used the correct capital letters when needed but sureley from my previous post you can work it out as i told you how to convert them.

2megaBytes = 2048 killoBytes, therefore 200KB/s (200 killoBytes a sec) is still only 10% of 2 megaBytes (200/2048) unless my calculator has broken

You are correct... but my broadband is only 2 megabits not 2 MegaBytes

Sorry Matt, this is only a bit true. The cable version is shared as it is a broadcast technology whereas the ADSL is point to point which means we each get our own pipeline. However if the rest is slow then then all of that does not matter. :thumbs_up ;) :icon_wink

I would really appreciate it if nobody sends me the link in a pm. i cant be dealing with the hassle and plus i know that none of you would do it anyway.
