That's not quite as impressive as it might sound. The format has been such that it could have happened in only the last five of the nineteen tournaments that have taken place.
In the 1966 Finals the winners of each of the four 1st round groups progressed through the quarter finals (the next round then). The winners of Group One eventually beat the winners of Group Two in the final, with the winners of Group Three beating the winners of Group Four in the 3rd/4th place play-off.

They just look fitter, quicker and more energetic than we do. They lack the quality to punish the top teams but the shift that Klinsmann has got them putting in is terrific. If they had a bit more quality in certain areas, as you have mentioned, they would be pushing the giants of World football. It doesn't surprise me that they are performing quite well, once the population gets into the sport a bit more, there will be a lot more American players of genuine quality across the European leagues.
