The club definitely said no tickets would be available on the day of the game. But quite often the home club says that to prevent fans going without tickets when it's nearly a sell out, to prevent a chance of people being locked out and going in the home areas instead.
But when this happens they'll quite often sell tickets on the day anyway to those people who turn up expecting to get in.
Exactly the same thing happened at Preston. Both clubs announced that there would be no tickets available to away fans, but they were nevertheless available on the day - not quite as formally as at Barnsley where a turnstile was provided but stewards around the turnstiles were able to direct ticketless City fans to a ready supply from the PNE ticket office.
