But surely if the goal of the company is to make money, then this takes higher priority over the quality of the product, so they sacrifice durability or battery life etc. for a better profit on each item sold.

Millions of people watch big brother, this does not mean it is high quality television. So many people are sucked in by clever advertising ploys and marketing, and this is what Apple are very good at.
