There seems to be quite a difference in opinion on what type of manager City need. Experienced, previous promotions, up and coming, managed a club of similar size, etc.

A manager’s either got “it” or he hasn’t, and in some cases, he may have had “it” in the past but he hasn’t got it now, or suddenly finds “it” when he didn’t have “it” before (wasn’t Fergie sacked from his first job at somewhere like St.Mirren?).

Lets have a look at some of our previous gaffers:-

Matt Gillies – don’t know where he came from but definitely not experienced in the top flight of English football. Went on to 2 FA Cup Finals, 2 League Cup Finals (1 win) unlucky not to have won the League in 62/63. Numerous top 10 finishes.

Frank O’Farrel – won 4th division with Torquay. Took over a struggling City at the bottom of the old first division. Relegated but reached cup final. Finished 3rd then 1st in old second division before going to Man U.

Jimmy Bloomfield – Promoted with Orient. Came to Filbert street and produced a quality, attractive side before fading fortunes at the end of his tenure.

Frank McLintock – No managerial experience. Absolute disaster

Now I may get one or two in the wrong order: -

Jock Wallace – Extremely successful and experienced Rangers Manager. 2 x the Treble – Struggled first year in charge at Leicester then 2nd Div champions. Relegated from top flight in first season back.

Gordon Milne – Experienced, got promotion with a lower league club (can’t remember which one, perhaps Wigan ). Did well at Coventry. Got City promoted, and did well in First Division (aided by Smith & Lineker’s goals)

Bryan Hamilton – Promoted with Wigan and considered an up and coming manager. Result at Leicester – Useless!

David Pleat – Very experienced and successful, worked wonders at Luton getting them into top level and keeping them there. Moved to Spurs and created a free scoring attractive side. Got to the FA Cup final. Then had problems with his legs (they wouldn’t walk past red lights allegedly). Arrived at Leicester where he was promptly crap.

Brian Little – Achieved promotion with Darlington. Then worked wonders at Leicester transforming a nearly relegated side into play off final in first year. You know the rest.

Mark McGee – Considered to be the brightest managerial prospect in England. Tipped to take over from Fergie. Achieved promotion with Reading. Didn’t stay long enough for us to find out whether he had “it” or not (subsequently proved at Wolves that he did not).

MON – regular progression with lower league clubs including promotions. No real experience with a club of Leicester’s size although had an unspectacular spell at Norwich. Again you know the rest.

Peter Taylor – Very Respected, Some success with smaller clubs (also one or two failures) Extremely successful with England U21’s. EVERYONE thought he would be a great appointment at Leicester. Result – UTTER SHITE.

Dave Basset – You couldn’t really ask for a better qualified/experienced manager for a club like Leicester. At least 5 promotions on his CV plus experience of keeping teams in the top flight. At Leicester – PANTS.

Micky Adams – Young, Up and coming, Promotion(?) with Brighton. Did well, getting us back in the prem at first attempt. Failed in the prem due to poor tactical nous and falling out with players. La Manga proved his undoing

Howard Wilkinson( with Dave Basset). Similar to Dave Basset in terms of experience. Only a stop gap but fan’s wouldn’t have wanted him anyway (He only won promotion with Notts County, Leeds, and won the old first Division with Leeds, so obviously not good enough! – Besides, he’s a boring old fart!)

Craig Levein – again up and coming. Wasn’t given the time (in my opinion) to get things sorted.

Rob Kelly – No previous experience. He didn’t really want to be a manager so no real comment apart from “WE NEVER GOT RELEGATED WITH HIM IN CHARGE”

Perhaps the only common thread is, we need someone who is up and coming and has won automatic promotion this last season, which kind of limits the number of potential candidates somewhat. We probably need someone who sees Leicester as a stepping stone to greater things but with a bigger club, who has the integrity to stick around here for the next 3 years in order to build solid foundations.

Mandy also needs to stop talking about back to back promotions to the prem. It is highly unlikely to happen, and it means that any new manager is doomed to fail!

I am not sure that looking to recreate the MON solution all over again has served us well since he left. :102:

Surely all we need to do is find the next Martin O'Neill?

Correct - and my positive suggestion is for Mandaric to persuade ITV to arrange a sort of 'Britain's Got Talent' series to identify the next MON.

Uncle Milan would obviously need to be the chair of a panel of experts with specialist advice from the Foxes Trust.

I have thought about this at length, and can confirm that the criteria for the new manager is to win football matches. And I didn't even need an apple to drop on my head for the breakthrough.

That's not the criteria for finding a Manager, that's his job description, brief and his target.

Good point Melts.

OK, the criteria therefore is to find a manager who can win football matches. There, brilliant.

Absolutely agree with your conclusion, top post!

I see Paul Ince and Darren Ferguson as the only candidates. I'm not sure tha tInce would come here, but would be very hopeful that Ferguson would, so long as he's asked and can be confident that the chairman won't tell him to do the job.

One of the real problems we have is that we are now saddled with a chairman with a (however fair) reputation for firing too early and butting in on the job. What manager with the balls we need is going to come and work for such a berk? Milan Mandaric has become very much part of the problem, if he can't change and quickly, he has to go.

I'm not suggesting that, I was showing the previous experience of the managers prior to them taking charge here, and showing the result of their appointments.

Gillies, O'Farrell, Bloomfield, Little, MON were all successful at Leicester, but didn't have previous success in the higher division that City were in when they took over. The other common link is that they had not failed previously either(as far as I know).

As to finding a new MON, dream on, it won't happen.

Great post Dr. F.

My main criteria would be:

1) a manager, not an assistant/coach or first timer
2) someone who has played or managed at a club of equal or greater size to LCFC. I think IH's small-club underdog approach hurt us badly, as Allen's might have done if he'd been given the chance.
3) someone who hasn't completely failed in the recent past
4) OK, this is somewhat flippant but, looking at the Premier League table, preferably someone who has played under Fergie at Man Utd!

Which all points to either Paul Ince or Darren Ferguson....

Which all points to either Paul Ince or Darren Ferguson....

I'd agree but given their respective temperaments and no doubt obstinate approach to management how long before falling out dramatically with MM ? Grayson's temperament may be a more complementary option for our Serbian benefactor....

But who would want to risk their career and previously unblemished track record at the elephant's graveyard for aspiring managers now located in the third division?

Unfortunately the likeliest candidates are the medium to long term unemployed with a dodgy cv hence their lack of employment.

Hope I'm wrong.

Quality post by the way Dr. Foxster.

Billy Davies is touted as coming in for talks with Milan this week.
He'd be a solid citizen in my view. had good football played at Preston and Derby in Championship.
He'd reshape the squad effectively in my opinion. He doesn't lack success and experience and he knows a lot of the players we already have. Both their shortcomings and their potential.

Get him in this week. Quit f*cking around and get the squad in shape sooner rather than later.

Great scenario and I would love it to happen. Not holding my breath though. :icon_conf
