I heard something about them introducing a fitness test. Apparently they want to filter out any big hulks becoming teachers as they scare the kids.

Plus no gingers under any circumstances - it gives the kids nightmares

Sorry for being serious, but have you considered studying part time? If you're just after a degree in the first instance, this might be an option. You will be giving up evenings and/or weekends, depending on which institution you study at, but I preferred this to distance learning as I found the discipline of having to attend lectures more beneficial, and I also preferred the interaction with lecturers (cue edit...) and most of all, I enjoyed meeting fellow students and the pub!! In my last job, one of my colleagues was doing the same degree through the OU, and she really did feel like she wasn't being supported throughout her studies, but horses for courses, and all that.

I have experience of the best and worst attitudes of bosses to whom you tell your out of work activities.

Thanks for the info so far guys.

I'll have a look at a few of these routes, especially the registered teacher programme. Sounds like a decent way to go.

I heard they are thinking of making the routes to teaching harder. Has anyone else heard this?

Having just gone through the application for the GTP I didn't find it any harder/easier than my wife who did it about 4 years ago or my sister who did the PGCE last year, however without a degree you have no chance on either. If you do, as Homer said, an Education degree they normally offer the chance to bolt on the PGCE on the end as an extra year.

The RTP looks interesting, but according to this - http://www.tda.gov.uk/Recruit/thetrainingprocess/typesofcourse/employmentbased/rtp.aspx - you will need to finish your second year of A-Levels at least and then get the degree/qualification.

However bear in mind, when you qualify on any course you still need to do a year as a Newly Qualified Teacher, after which you are assessed. No matter what you passed your course with, if you fail the NQT year you cannot be a teacher in England, ever.

If you want to read how I found it check out my blog I kept at - http://www.mattbeighton.co.uk/category/teacher-training/ - I kept it for this purpose
