I have made the shift to full-blown middle age by taking on an allotment. I've sat in a garden a few times but that is the extent of my knowledge.

Any books I ought to read up on before going to a garden centre to kit up on tools and sheds?

Tbh I lost interest in gardening when the kids came along but for a while I was quite keen.
The 'Garden Expert' series of books are all you really need.

Pretty similar to growing bees and raising asparagus I guess. I'm going to have this outdoor thing nailed on by summer.

Actually, Hessayon isn't too bad. Most of it is your own trial and error, it's more fun.
I put peas, runner beans, melons and some first early pots in at the weekend.
what are your family's favourites? more involvement and enjoyment if they are involved!

You can grow vast quantities of weed too, apparently.

The Expert guides are a good start. Try your local charity book store first. Local council for subsidised composters, caddies & water butts. Stainless steel spade and fork. Bolt valuables to flagstones, through shed floor. Blank shotgun cartridges fitted inside the shed door.
Find a source of horse shit (away from this site).
Put the effort in quickly before the weed takes hold. Retire to the shed and enjoy.
Mead tastes shit.
