It takes two to agree to cancel an agreement. If we just terminated it, he would have been due the full wages up to the end of the contract. Agreeing to cancel it would possibly involve him agreeing to take a little less for a lump sum now. Also, if he is going to claim on an insurance policy if he is unable to play anymore, he can't be drawing wages at the same time, so there might be a bit of leeway for him to take less from us than he is contactually entitled to.
