IMO if you gain advantage from it then it should be a foul, irrespective of intent. If you go for a tackle intending to win the ball, but miss and get the player it is a foul regardless of intent.

So if a player takes a screaming shot which deflects off his own player's leg near the goal line, that is a goal, but if it deflects off his arm it should be disallowed?

It's not your opinion that counts - it's the Laws of the Game that rules here.

Your comparison with a tackle is irrelevant. With a foul there is no need for intent; the act of tripping, pushing etc is sufficient for a foul to be given. It's only with handball that there must be intent.

If it is not deliberate, i.e. ball to hand, then it is the same as if it hit his leg or shoulder or head.

If you removed the intent thing from handball you'd get players deliberately aiming for the arms of opposition players in the area to win a penalty.
I heard recently that the handball law, or interpretation thereof, has changed somewhat this season.

"Ball to hand" no longer applies. It's now a case of if the ball hits your hand/arm and your hand/arm is not in a "natural" position, let's say above your head when you're not jumping in the air, it doesn't matter how close or hard the ball has been hit at you, it's handball. Likewise, if your hand/arm is in a natural position, say down by your side, then it's not handball even if it's not hit at you from close range. Or something along those lines anyway.

It's still an on-the-spot decision that refs will get wrong, though, so no change there.

Almost forgot about this, but am I right in thinking that the away fans sang a little ditty to the tune of 'Anarchy in the UK' during this game ?
