Bamba 4 - worst I've seen him play, left his man free for the first

He also made about 3 or 4 match saving blocks towards the end.

Very harsh. At the very least he delivered an absolutely perfect ball to assist (or rather put on plate for Vassell) the first goal and another fantastic ball to send Vassell one-on-one.

Anyway, all in all. We've just beaten the form side in the country and I've just seen a cracking open, attacking game of football. Very happy. Listening to the radio on the way home, you'd have thought we'd have lost 4-0 with the miserable sods calling in.

Just back. Thoroughly enjoyed the game but it was nail biting/edge of seat/butt clenching at the end. Last 10/15 mins I was thinking we'd be lucky with a point. Thank Edna I was wrong. Ref had a questionable game - for both sides and looked like he bottled it on a few occasions. Still feel like we sometimes are afraid to push forward and I can't stand the way some of our players are playing the waiting game on the ball rather than going to it. All in all though I think we put in an excellent shift. Kasper MOM for me. Who did get it btw?

Kasper - 8 - Some huge saves, kept us in it second half.

Paintsil - 6 - Lallana really gave him the run around but he stayed fairly steady. Very frustrating that he kept slipping over, probably due to his choice of footwear.

Bamba - 6 - Usual combination of skill, composure and shit-your-pants-terrifying moments at the back.

Mills - 7 - Distribution is still poop but he was largely quite solid. Some good blocks and tackles including a brilliant last minute lunge to stop Lambert in the first half. (Lambert by the way came across as a whinging fat bastard who was lucky not to see a card for raising his hand to Paintsil)

Koncheskey - 6 - Good going forwardand an improved performance at the back, however when crosses arrive from the left he seems to completely disappear.

King - 5 - Hardly noticed him, kept the ball quite well for the fist half an hour or so though.

Wellens - 6 - Still giving the ball away far too easily when under pressure. Cracking goal.

Fernandes - 7 - Very strong performance, if it hadn't been for him I think Southampton would have dominated the game even more. Good water-carryer for Wellens.

Danns - 6 - Doesn't always do much with the ball but he works so hard to close people down and put his foot in.

Vassell - 6 - Well taken goal, looked dead on his feet by the end. Not sure the switch to 4-5-1 really worked and Vassell definatly suffered being alone in the middle.

Schlupp - 7 - Very exciting prospect, smart, good control and lightening quick. For the 30 or so minutes that him and Darius played next to each other the Southampton defence simply couldn't cope. Nice assisst for Wellens too.

Not the best overall performance, but a huge win and a very promising first half. That defence needs some serious work getting organised though, too much last ditch stuff for me to take at times.

Not even his inch perfect pass for our first goal?

I thought he played well today, worked tirelessly at both ends. Delivered the ball for our first goal and also put it on a plate for Fernandes who headed straight at the keeper.

It annoys me that people say he is anonymous. Wellens (who I thought was good today) gets off lightly sometimes because he whacks the odd speculative pass.

Not even his inch perfect pass for our first goal?

That was nice, decent shot just wide of the post too later on. Maybe five is a bit harsh, it just seemed that when we were breaking up their play or having any meaningful possession, it was Wellens and Fernandes that were involved.

I love Kingy, just don't think he had one of his best games today. He wasn't particularly poor at all, just not that great either.

Leicester City vs Southampton

3 - 2

Date:

Venue:

Attendance:

S Mathieson

Leicester inflicted the first defeat of the season on Nigel Adkins' men with an action packed 3-2 game.

Saints' long run of ten consecutive league victories succumbed in an enthralling encounter at the King Power Stadium which could have gone either way.

Unfortunately for the visitors, they get themselves an uphill battle as they headed into the half time interval 3-1 down, with a goal right on the stroke of the break from Sol Bamba proving decisive.

Dan Harding had headed a response after Saints had gone 2-0 down to goals from Darius Vassell and Richie Wellens, but it was the second half where the visitors really found their feet.

They controlled the second 45, and got the quick response they needed when David Connolly headed home eight minutes after the re-start. The resulting onslaught from Adkins' side went unrewarded, as Foxes 'keeper Kasper Schmeichel produced some outstanding saves late on to preserve the hosts' lead.

Saints line up unchanged for the fourth game running, with two summer additions Danny Fox and Steve De Ridder amongst the substitutes.

The Foxes got the game underway in their traditional blue shirts amongst a near capacity crowd at the recently renamed King Power Stadium.

A heavy downpour prior to kick-off failed to dampen the atmosphere inside the ground though, with the 3,000 strong visiting supporters easily drowning out an expectant Leicester fanbase, who had yet to see their side pick up a point at their home so far this term.

They were given hope however, with less than three minute son the clock when they got their noses in front. Full back Paul Konchesky floated in a dangerous cross from the left, and former England striker Darius VASSELL poked home from inside the six yard box, giving kelvin Davis no chance in the Saints goal.

The hosts had to make an early change when ex Portsmouth striker David Nugent was forced off through injury, and was given a warm send off from the Saints fans before being replaced by Jeffrey Schlupp.

Leicester threatened again on 9 with Konchesky again the provider with a more direct delivery which Andy King headed powerfully over the bar from the centre.

Adkins' side recovered from their initial setback, but took a while to get into their natural rhythm, but the creative flair of Cork and Lallana soon drew opportunities, with the former almost getting on the end of the winger's chip into the area, but unable to force the airborne ball on target.

Sven Goran Eriksson's men dealt the visitors a blow however, when they hit a superb second strike on 21 minutes through Richie WELLENS. The midfielder was teed up from the left by John Pantsil, and he swept home a measured curling strike, which Davis again could do little about as it nestled into the net for 2-0.

The two goal advantage lasted just seven minutes, as Saints cut the deficit in half through an unlikely source.

Lallana's persistence on the left created the space for a cross from the byline which was met clinically by the head of Dan HARDING, whose effort flew in down the centre of the goal.

A hugely open and entertaining spectacle saw the chances continue to arrive at both ends. Gelson Fernandes forced a terrific punched save from Davis with a header, and Neil Danns also went close from distance, before Connolly tried his luck with a 40 yard lob which Kasper Schmeichel read well.

Dan Seaborne then clipped Danns as the former Crystal Palace man sped towards goal, and the resulting set piece on 37 saw Davis was called into action again, when he dived across to keep out Konchesky's whipped free-kick delivery from 25 yards.

As play entered the last five minutes of the half Lambert and Lallana linked up impressively with the latter's poke at the target denied by an outstretched leg as he bore down on goal.

Just as three minutes were added on for stoppages at the end of the half, The Foxes grabbed a crucial third goal to give Saints an uphill task.

It arrived from the head of defender Sol BAMBA who crashed home a delivery from a corner on the right, to restore the hosts' two goal advantage.

Half Time: Leicester 3-1 Saints

Saints replaced Richardson with Morgan Schneiderlin at the break with the Frenchman slotting in to the middle alongside Hammond, as Jack Cork moved to right back.

The visitors looked comfortable on the ball following the change as they moved forward with a higher tempo, which eventually led to Connolly firing narrowly over with a fierce rising shot.

Seaborne was cautioned for a foul on Vassell that led to Konchesky trying his luck again with a dead ball, but his strike flew high and wide of Davis' goal.

At the other end, Guly saw a low strike from range pushed behind by Schmeichel, and the resulting corner brought with it a well-timed second goal for the visitors.

Lallana's swirling delivery was flicked on by a blue shirt, and met at the far post by the pouncing David CONNOLLY who nodded home from close range to make it 3-2 on 53 minutes.

The strike gave Saints a much needed foothold in the game, with the hosts seemingly concentrating more on preventing an equaliser rather than killing the match off which allowed Adkins' side to get their possession play going.

Lallana and Connolly both recovered from knocks which required treatment, and soon after, Saints number 20 twisted and turned into the area, where he appeared to be shoved off the ball unfairly, but not according to the referee.

Steve De Ridder was introduced for Guly in the 71st minute, and the Belgian's impact was instant as he forced the first in a series of corners which led to Schneiderlin seeing a firm low goalbound drive blocked by Bamba.

The Foxes defender almost undid his good work moments later when he single handedly tried to take on Connolly and Hammond, but the hosts escaped as Harding eventually fired over.

Leicester switched Paul Gallagher for King, and saw Danns booked for a late challenge on Harding. The foul preceded Danny Fox's arrival in place of Harding got the final 11 minutes.

Fox picked out Connolly at the far post with a pinpoint delivery on 83 which the Irishman arrowed in towards the near post which somehow stayed out as Schmeichel gathered gratefully.

The 'keeper came to The Foxes rescue again when Lallana and Connolly combined leading to the midfielder to force a terrific low save to keep Saints at bay.

Remarkably, he was at it again on 86 when Lallana once more was denied as the winger flung himself at Fox's cross from the left, only for the shot stopper to get a hand on it at point blank range.

Leicester replaced Wellend with Abe for the last four minutes, before five additional minutes were put on to the watch during which time, Saints' best chance fell to Lallana, who was blocked by a fierce lunge as the hosts held on to all three points.

Full Time: Leicester 3-2 Saints

Super football from start to finish. It really was

We were excellent first half. Could have had four or five IMO - not counting our third as Bamab seemmed to be rogering their player up the arris

Astonished that Sven chose to change it round after that. A simply incomprehensible decision that could (and should) have cost us the game. They pissed all over us as a consequence, and I still can't quite work out how they didn't score three or four against our panicky Keystone Cops patrolling the back four.

Having said that, we did beat the best footballing team we have played for many a long time. If they manage to bring in another striker and a centre back I'd put a lot of money on them getting automatic promotion. They were excellent

Scores on the doors:

Schmeichel - 8 kept us in it in the second half, putting everything and anything in the way of the ball. Distribution is also outstanding
Pantsil - 4 Comedy defending for the first, and in the lead up to the second. Wasteful in possession and all over the place in the last half hour
Konchesky - 8 super going forward in the first half. Absolutely outstanding defending in the second.
Bamba - 4 scary feckin' shit, man. Jeebus wept
Mills - 4 piss ppor all round
Wellens - 8 simply wonderful in the first half, controlling everything. Swamped in the second as we sat 15 yards deeper than we should have been
Fernandes - 7 Never stops, outstanding in the last half hour
Danns - 6 some good, some bad, some awful. Looks good in combination with Konch coming forward
King - 6 some great attacking midfield play in the first half. Some awful 'don't know what the feck to do' play in the second
Schlupp - 7 super stuff in the first 45. Wasted on the wing in the second
Vassell - 7 good stuff all round, but knackered after 70 minutes

I thought Sven made an interesting point in his post match interview. He said in the second half we were almost afraid to push up the pitch, which invited the opposition on to us. As ever the radio leics contingent were complaining about formations, saying the we shouldn't have switched to 4-5-1, that schlupp was isolated out wide etc etc. If anybody had switched the radio on not knowing the result, you would have definitely thought we'd lost. Some people have clearly got too big for their boots. Just because Southampton have come from league one doesn't mean they are going to be easy pickings (as shown by their excellent start). Yes we clung on and Kasper saved us on several occasions but we just beat the top team FFS!!!!

I know it's only 5 games in, but Schmeichel and Fernandes have both been absolute class so far for us.

Think we need to get into perspective that we've just beaten a team that are top of the table with a 100% record....
Sven has to do a few things in order to deliver a bit more solidity and consistency.
- Tunchev recalled from Palace after his month is up. A fit Tunchev is better than Bamba or Mills.
- Ensure Fernandes and Wellens offer some protection to the back four.
- Come up with a formation that ensures King, Schlupp and Danns stay in touch with the front man.
- Sign Nicky Maynard.

My first choice team going forward would be:
Schmeichel,
Pantsil, Tunchev, Mills, Konchesky
Fernandes, Wellens
King
Schlupp Maynard Vassell.
Subs: new goalie, Bamba, Nugent, Gallagher, Danns

Pantsil 6? Pants down more like, Lallana gave him a lesson. The skill for the first was worth of a higher level.

Mills is jeykll and Hyde. Some brilliant blocks and headers, then equally as bad decisions.

Southampton were the best side I'd seem down the KP for a long time. Brilliant football game.

Wouldn't it be nice to have the Sol Bamba that played against Real Madrid.

Comical after the match doing his lap of honour.

Still not convinced by people aging tunchev is te answer, we've never seen him in this league really.

Also I didn't notice a formation change, but they made a sub at half time and really came at us. For me, fans seem to continue to be obsessed with formation

I heard this too. How do they know we shouldn't have done that and it wasn't a tactical masterstroke? Southampton would have come out fighting as they did second half anyway, for all we know that change in formation could have saved us another goal and won us the match. We won the game doing it so it was a good decision imo. I doubt it would have had much of an impact on the result anyway, Southampton were a very good side and were always going to come out so strong second half.
