you could put up a good arguement that the clubs themselves do not want to play a local rival on boxing day, as local matches should be a reasonable attendance whatever time of the season.

That's an argument presented in another article that was on the same website about a year ago. Local derbies are intentionally avoided on the first and last games of the season and on Boxing Day, because they know these dates will have big attendances anyway. If they were local derbies as well, they'd effectively be sacrificing a big attendance.

Having been away for much of the summer, I've not had a chance to do my usual version of the fixture list until now. It prints out onto a single sheet of A4 - very handy for the noticeboard above your desk at work or for hanging up in the kitchen at home.
