I think the reality is we cannot afford to buy Premiership players good enough to play in the Premiership. We can afford squad Premiership players who would be good in the Championship. When we get promotion we can then use the £25-30 million a year to build a Premiership team.

But that sort of money would get you no more than two good players.

We would be looking to stay there, not win the feckin' thing. £25 million could buy you nearly a whole new team decent enough to stay up

Not if their wages had to come out of the £25m.

Plus you can buy players that might get you promoted but then there not good enough for the premiership, otherwise your in a position where you've got to off load 90% of the team and completely re-build in just a few months! That has relegation written all over it. Bit like what has happened at Derby, unless they make some major signings they are fecked even before the season starts!

Wigan stayed up without shelling out £100 million in fees and wages. As Homer said, first you build a team to just get you there using top Championship players and/or average Premiership players. Then you improve the team, using Premiership money, to stay there. Once your team is strong enough to stay there, then you set about improving it to move up the table.

IMO Wigan are certs for relegation for the coming season.

But all the other teams in the division would also have £25million, most of them would have had that the previous season too. None of them will want to risk going down, so we'll have to compete with 19 other teams for players. It's not like we'll suddenly be able to start signing big names that other Premiership clubs can't afford.

Fully agree,Jeff. We must make sure that the foriegn scouting team finds player that other Premiership teams have not come across, so that we can get them before they come on the open market. THe secret to building a succesful team in the Premiership is to combine good finds from abroad with a good young player developement from within the club system. Still I think this might be a bit more relevant next season, I think this season will be building block to an all out assault next season.
