Matt Piper has asked to go out on loan to regain match fitness after a long injury.

Inevitably we have to ask:

Would he want to come back?

Would we want him back?

Would he still be as good as when he left?

Would Levein want another loan player he cannot buy?

... and of course they say 'never go back', even if he was potentially one of the best right wingers we had.

yes
no

I think we should wait and see how he performs in a couple of reserve games.

If he plays well and he is prepared to come and we can afford him then I think we should get him and play him instead of Momo Sylla.

Surely he cannot be any worse than Sylla.

One of the best right wingers we ever had?? You having a laugh?

No thanks, he has gone and should remain that way. That is unless Morris is/remains fit and we need another dummy for our medical experiments.

Haven't we already got enough chronically unfit midfielders at the club?

I don't normally look at the game the way that a hard-nosed businessman would, but even I have got to admit that £3,000,000 for Matt Piper was the best deal we have ever struck!

Quite - Matt Piper played for about 5 minutes and is "one of the best right wingers we ever had" !!!!!!!

....I've seen Mal Griffiths, Keith Weller and even right wingers of the likes of Jackie Sinclair and Howard Riley who all had football careers, whilst the unfortunate Piper was a flash in the pan.

The best thing about Matt Piper from a Leicester point of view is that we got serious money for him before it became clear that he is yet another medical case. Not his fault of course, but about the last thing we need.

exactly people on here just look for a point to argue about- i wouldn't mind seeing him back here :icon_cool

Feck off.... no point of argument here! Piper played only a couple of games so how could people compare him to the likes of Weller.

When Lineker made his debut ( against Oldham I think) another player outshone him. This lad was to be the best player the club had produced, he was called Dave Buchanan. He too went to Sunderland and drifted into obscurity. What I am saying is you can have a good start to a footballing career, but to maintain it is another thing.

I think some people should look up the word 'potentially' in a dictionary before they start ranting.

That means virtually every player who plays a few games for us is "potentially" the best thing ever, until they get found out.
The amount of times Piper played for us, I could not make a guess if he was to turn out good or bad. But a lot of people seem to think he was some sort of club legend.
He scored our last goal at Filbert Street and he will be remembered for that, and I think that was his only goal?

for someone who is meant to be a boy genius i was not myself stating that piper was going to be one of the greatest wingers this club has ever produced. No i was saying that why are you having a go at someone who thought he had that POTENTIAL to be great.

Its not about ranting - its about all the daft things said about Matt Piper...starting with the famous quote from the great Chairman George to the effect that the club would not be prepared to sell this player for £10m; immediately followed by (quite rightly) snatching off Sunderland's fingers for a fraction of that.

Matt Piper struck me as a talented young winger but too slight for his own good and unlikely to score many goals. He had potential but was wonderfully talked up.

It's not just us who think he had the potential to be a great player, Sunderland obviously thought the same thing to pay so much for a relatively inexperienced player.

Like we did with Akinbiyi? People were staggered at the time when Sunderland bought him. But this is what happens when clubs go silly with sky money

excellent point, just what I was trying to say. He did not play enough games in my mind to show he could do it for the long haul. There have been hundreds of players his age who showed the same "potential" at other clubs, moved to a bigger club and the bottom of the world fell out.
