Re: Meggy Hits Nail on Head!

The more I think about it, I feel it is a cop out myself, just look at the squads Davies and Boothroyd have got into the PL. :102:

Of course it is - very careful PR over the past few days

It's the players, it's the fans, it's Martin Allen, it's Filbert the Fox etc. etc.

Fact is, they were good enough to piss all over Watford, and therefore are good enough to piss all over anyone in this league - provided they are coached and managed and motivated correctly

These are simply ready-made excuses in preparation for failure

Re: Meggy Hits Nail on Head!

Current squad/team in terms of quality I think is about 7th-8th (thus they should go up a place or two in the near future). This is a considerable improvement on last season. But in saying this I think Megson is therefore right in his assessment, though it is a risk saying it in public for player morale. I can't imagine Kinsboro', McCauley, Weslowski, Hume & Clemence taking kindly to being described as 'much as a muchness'. The remaining players that have played in the first team so far however are all distinctly average - and only 3 out of those 5 are a really top notch.

The loan system, and the January window, should be an opportunity for M&M to notch up the quality of the squad. Until then, don't be suprised if Leicester hover around mid-table for a while. A surfeit of average players, a new squad & new manager all finding out about each other and trying to gell - all this should conspire to keep the club round about where it is for a while longer.

I don't think players like Fulop, Ngotti Kisnorbo, Clemence and Hume are much of a muchness. I might also include McAulay and perhaps de Fries in that. I have not given up on Cort yet. I do think that despite Sheehan's recent goal we are very weak on the left side. I also think that there are mixups because some of the players are not gelling together. Does anyone know whether Ferrerra and Kaebi played well for the reserves?

Re: Meggy Hits Nail on Head!

Well said Gary Megson..... A manager who tells it like it is unlike Martin Allen who talked us up all the time with nothing to back it up.

Re: Meggy Hits Nail on Head!

I think he is just preparing the fans for the well we are still gelling and we are still getting to know the players speech after the 3-0 defeat on Saturday.

.

Could be in the bottom 3 after Charlton. Not the sort of start we were looking for.

Re: Meggy Hits Nail on Head!

We are rapidly getting to the stage where our squad is unwieldy. 45 is top side before bringing too many more players in, we need to look at shipping some out!

I would imagine there is plenty of grumbling behind the scenes. Most footballers have big ego's and i'd expect at least half of the 45 to think that they should be automatic choices for every game.

The 45 is an exaggeration for effect as was his much of a muchness phrase. ;)

Or O'Neill who was always going on about how 'great' we played and how 'super' or 'marvellous' the players were? Mind you, at least MON could point to having actually achieved something with us.

Re: Meggy Hits Nail on Head!

I have to say, that the assessment is spot on. I lost count of the summer signings, but how many are an improvement on what was here? Clemence stands out and perhaps N'Gotty.
The problem with a manager publically saying what Megson has, is that the players feel unwanted and it is hardly likely to get a string of other teams eager to buy the unwanted squad members. All those players whose services were to be discontinued in the summer; we told them that they had no future, but the majority of them are still on the payroll.

The assessment may be "spot on", but this is Megson playing down expectations - and who can blame him.

He took on the job because he was desperate and no one better wanted it and with the background of Milan insisting that he expects promotion this season.

It seems to me that there are a host of difficult issues: as you say a bunch of players from previous failed squads who were told that they were going but who it has proved impossible to move on - no surprise there!; a dog's dinner montage of signings this summer of which few are likely to prove quality; a poor start to the league season when we needed a bit of a flyer to gain confidence.

If Megson can sort all this out then he will be a hero.....but somehow I think the money is on another change before the start of next season.

I wonder if he will be given money to spend in January? I know this will depend on his efforts up to then but it will perhaps indicate Milans thinking about him by that point too.

Re: Meggy Hits Nail on Head!

I think Megson is right although I think he is over egging it slightly. We have a hell of a lot more than many teams in the division, yet I suppose we have less than some too. We have a fair few solid workmanlike players but we lack any players with real quality or creativity. A wide player for me is a necessity and a centre forward is also a priority.

When we were promoted under Adams IMO we had one player with premiership quality that got us promoted and that was Izzet. The number of goals that he created and scored that season was the basis for our promotion. If it wasn't for him I really do believe we would have been mid table. Thats the type of player we lack right now. We have the basis but we need that extra bit.

Re: Meggy Hits Nail on Head!

I feel we have the quality to mount a challenge. In Fulop, Chambers, N'Gotty, Kismybum, McAulay, Clarke (please), Clem, Weso, Hume and DJ at least I think they are as good as any players in this league.
