Re: Meggy Hits Nail on Head!

Well said Gary Megson..... A manager who tells it like it is unlike Martin Allen who talked us up all the time with nothing to back it up.

So Megson says we are shit and we are shit - thats OK?

Allen says we are progressing and looking and we actually look good and hammer the league leaders - thats nonsense??

The blame lies firmly at the door of Mandaric, he rightly IMO got rid of Kelly who had clearly lost the respect of the playing staff, many of whom had already been told by Mandaric that they were gone in the summer, in came Worthington who under difficult and pressurised circumstances managed to unite the squad to take 6 important points in 4 games to ensure survival.

Then IMO on the back of a 4-1 defeat in a dead rubber of a game and MM's arrogance that he would attract a higher profile manager he allowed Worthington to walk away, when IMO he had done more than enough to warrant the opportunity to build a new squad and plan for a an assault on the premiership.

MM after floundering to attract his high profile manager then opted for an unproven lower league manager in Martin Allen, who whilst enjoying a blossoming reputation, was known to be somewhat eccentric and off the wall. The rest is history 4 games in and the two egomaniacs relationsip is beyond repair.

So Milan embarks on another mission to appoint yet another new manager safe in the knowledge that his reputation and club will attract several high profile candidates, sadly these fail to materialise and MM is left to sift through the list of out of work managers when he comes across the name of Gary Megson who incidently has a pretty similar record to a certain Nigel Worthington.

The problem is, IMO Mandaric has lost a lot of respect from within the club mainly the playing staff and supporters. When he sacked Kelly, bought in NW and told players they had no future it seemed to galvanise the squad and it was almost like a last chance saloon, the problem was in failing to move many of these players on in the summer, failing to attract a top name manager on two occasions means that MM has maybe lost some of his fear factor, the players now that MM is trigger happy so if they don't like a manager then they take their foot off the paddle and within six weeks he will be gone. Hardly a reciepe for a successful club.

MM should have given Wortho the job in the summer at least we would have had some stability and I think MM would have been able to retain stability and some sort of respect, IMO the players have no more level of desire or commitment than what was displayed under Kelly and that IMO is the fault of MM.

The players have to have responsibility for their own actions. Thing is, football is so high profile and awash with money for the poor dears these days (yes, even at our club) that they don't think twice about things like that.

But when MM got rid of Kelly and replaced him with Wortho, it seemed to do the trick, their was a togetherness amongst the squad again but MM has destroyed that by making rash decisions and basically undermining the importance and significance of the role of team manager.

I don't disagree with you, just saying that professional footballers ought to rise above that and play to the best of their abilities and with pride. If players use the managerial situation as a reason for their lack of spirit, performance, passion whatever then the mollycoddled highly paid poor dears really ought to take a good long look at themselves in the mirror.

I agree but the sad truth of it is that it appears to have been a deep rooted problem at our club for the last three seasons and it was something that I hoped MM would deal with, but by continually changing managers, he has had 4 in little over 9 months, he has created an environment that lacks professionalism, there does not appear to be any formal long term plan in place and is verging on farce, would you want to go to work for a business like that day in day out, regardless of salary I know I wouldn't.

but without someone to motivate players it wont happen and this is across the board here Prem/champ/div1,2,3 and so on .

every manager/coach has to motivate their players to get the most out of them

agreed ,you just couldnt work like it and i think this is the problem at our club ,theplayers get told to play one way then it changes when a new manager comes in as the said manager will want them to play his way and not the way they have been with other managers

True. This is where I have some sympathy with the 'Mars Bar and BBQ set' issue. You can't give players baby Bentleys for good performances so I can see why something a little 'different' was tried. Obviously didn't work though and shouldn't be used to mask the deficiencies of the motivator.

I still hark back to the fact that the best players should be self-motivated though.

Spot on A-Z. The long term plan seems to change on a regular basis due it seems to MM's impatience and arrogance. He wants promotion this season but has failed to bring in enough quality to strengthen the squad in key areas and he has failed to realise that real top quality managers will not be attracted by his hire them, fire them reputation. The club needs a period of stability and a chance to establish the spine of a team that can give a platform to build on.

We now have a chairman who is creating instability in the club, a manager whose attitude seems to be 'it's not my fault if it all goes pear shaped' and an oversized, underperforming squad. The best managers at this level are able to create a team which outperforms the sum of it's parts, Megson I fear is not one of these. I remain hopefull that I'm wrong.

- Nothing to add.

All unfortunately true.

Pompey fans may have found Milan's style endearing particularly when he brought back 'Arry - but other quality managers don't seem keen to sign on for him.

This summer's player signings looked all over the place. It appeared that very different minds were at work and probably in conflict in the recruitment policy. The end product looks like there is scarcely any better quality than there was before although Clemence is an experienced professional with good credentials at this level.

The stability things is the biggest problem - of course every club needs stability but that assumes that the basics are in place. I am very doubtful if Gary Megson should be part of those basics and yet one is inclined to say we must stick with him because the club can't take much more turmoil and expect to survive even in this division - and because where is the evidence that Milan would be able to bring in anyone else better if he tried to find a fifth manager in a few months.

Absolutely. We're clearly stuck with Megson for the season because he was the best Milan could get - it became pretty clear that there was a succession of managers saying, "No thanks." after MA2's sacking. If Megson is hoyed out, the options are going to be even less palatable.

Trouble is, I don't think he's good enough and he seems to be already preparing us for 3rd division football in his press conferences. And then delivering performances on the pitch that will take us there.

Leaving aside the alleged emnity towards the Forest - I think many of us were shocked that they actually went down that season. Whatever, the problems that he inherited one would have expected him to have enough about him to have got them clear. But he didn't.

Milan appears to lose his rag when faced with criticism and those who have cried about MA2 have undoubtedly done over the top given that he was only here for five minutes, however Megson was a dismal appointment indeed and everything about him portrays negativism. I can understand that he wanted to downplay expectations but the danger is as you say that it comes across as preparing the ground for failure.
