When we were promoted under Adams IMO we had one player with premiership quality that got us promoted and that was Izzet. The number of goals that he created and scored that season was the basis for our promotion. If it wasn't for him I really do believe we would have been mid table. Thats the type of player we lack right now. We have the basis but we need that extra bit.
So true. I recall one game in that season - can't remember opposition, when Izzet returned from injury. The difference to the side was just stunning. Adams rightly made the point that season that without Izzet we were just an ordinary side.
I think you are right, Milan needed to bring in at least one player with real quality and flair. This is extremely difficult to do - obviously - but I fear that without this dimension that it is mid table mediocrity where we shall finish. I would almost say mid-table at best but I don't want to be unduly pessimistic (for a change!).
The assessment may be "spot on", but this is Megson playing down expectations - and who can blame him.
He took on the job because he was desperate and no one better wanted it and with the background of Milan insisting that he expects promotion this season.
It seems to me that there are a host of difficult issues: as you say a bunch of players from previous failed squads who were told that they were going but who it has proved impossible to move on - no surprise there!; a dog's dinner montage of signings this summer of which few are likely to prove quality; a poor start to the league season when we needed a bit of a flyer to gain confidence.
If Megson can sort all this out then he will be a hero.....but somehow I think the money is on another change before the start of next season.
There is no reason why managers should be all sunshine and smiles. No one told Brian Clough he had to be positive. He publicly complained that Gary Megson could not trap a bag of cement. It was not unknown for Cloughie to punch Roy Keane in the stomach and even on one occasion to clout a couple of fans who annoyed him. I am not suggesting Gary Megson should go that far.
Graham Kavanagh is still available for loan from Sunderland ... could be a missing link?

Kavanagh turns up at Wednesday - they win their first game of the season. Co-incidence? We really missed out on him I fear.
but we've got sergio hellings...!
Much of a muchness but good enough to stuff the league leaders 4-1
Should give them a real confidence boost, that
The statement by Megson at the start of this thread has already had an effect ... I don't think it's a good policy to come into a club and start rubbishing the players ... wasn't it the players who were partly responsible for Allen's demise ??? All Megson has done is get the players offside ... they weren't even trying yesterday ... Bring on the next manager ... Ginger nuts is history ...
