Deep. I really don't have an idea of the figure but I seem to remember someone saying the one at the top of my road is 18ft deep but I can't really remember.

He lied.

Most canals are around 4 feet deep.

... in the middle of the navigable channel and rather less towards the edges.

The usual advice given to somebody who falls into the canal is:

1. Stand up
2. Walk to edge (not easy)
3. Hang onto the edge until somebody gets you out.

Unfortunately not everybody is able to do no.1 - if they have hit their head on the way in, for instance.

Not unless you live in the cottage next to Foxton locks

First of All R.I.P, my thoughts are with his family and friends. Even tho i live away from Leicester, i always try to keep up to date with what happends at "home". When i read this it was strange cause things like this just don't happen in Leicester.

So what this accidental death? or Murder? They haven't mentioned anything on the website of the Mockery. I thought he might have drank a bit slipped into the Canal and drowned :(

From narrowboatworld.com:

THE police have confirmed that the body discovered in the Grand Union Canal in Leicester is indeed that of the missing student.

It is that of Phil Dillon who went missing a month ago. There are no suspicious circumstances.

It was a towpath walker who alerted the police yesterday (Thursday) with the area cordoned off for forensic tests.

He was last seen walking down a ramp towards the waterway in the early hours after a night out during February.
